I say old, I'm only six (nearly seven) but I'm 'very astute for my age.'
Anyway, basically I like the premise very much but it feels very blocky. Clearly there's a lot left to be done, but overall I like the feel of the game despite it seeming quite alien to RO1 in parts.
My initial criticisms are thus:
- The game seems to clip a lot - people with people and people with walls (especially when ducking behind them in cover). This is probably my main issue with the game at this stage, and if it's not a huge amount of work I really do suggest turning it off entirely. I've heard that the main reason for it is people getting blocked in doorways and suchlike - well, that happened, and people will have died by being gunned down in narrow hallways. I don't mind that (it'd be frustrating, but realistic) and it would certainly look better than being able to see/move through people and walls.
- Make it so the ESC key exits chat (which I set to the T key) like in RO1 and other similar games. Having to remember to press T again is quite annoying, and I'm so used to it being like that it becomes frustrating and can get me killed because obviously when in chat you're vulnerable.
- There are several graphical glitches, particularly when you press ESC and go to the menu screen. I imagine these have been noted and fixed, though.
- Sprinting. A popular complaint I think; overall the game just wants slowing down a notch. I remember RO1 being noticeably slower, but you sort of got the idea that all that equipment and weaponry combined with general fatigue made it sort of realistic. I don't mind RO2 speeding things up a bit overall, but I think somewhere between the two would be better.
- Sprinting needs to be nerfed; you can run too quickly and too far before feeling tired, and there appear to be few if any negative effects.
- I got in a tank and was very confused. I actually have too many individual issues here; basically I had no idea what I was doing, the bots seemed to be going insane (both physically and verbally) and my friend couldn't get in the tank even though I distinctly remembered allowing humans to do so. Maybe the manual will solve this - I don't know.
Out of interest, I hope DDE owners (now I own it
) get .PDF files with map/tank/weapon info - I remember the old RO1 tank charts and I found them useful and pretty cool. I know there's only two right now, but having those charts released alongside each new vehicle would be really nice. I'm sure everyone would agree with that.
I think that's about it. I'm sure most of these issues will get sorted over time, but the game feels very beta-ish right now, and I'm just sceptical as to how much better it will be in a week or two. Don't shoot me down for this, but on balance so far I actually feel Christmas would have been a better release date. I think the devs probably agree too. :IS2:
