You could just mix it with a bit of Brothers in Arms and Battlefield 2 and some more realistic ways.

Before you spawn you'll enter some sort of class-selection menu.

The players pick a squadleader before the match begins.
The server randomly puts you in a squad.

Now, in BiA you have fancy corona's pointing where to let your firemen shoot.
Alternativly, RO:O could use voice-commands to let your firemen know where to shoot. (Note: Only most high-ranking officers/soldiers in the squad may use leader voice-commands, the lower-ranking officers/soldiers may only use the normal voice-commands)
Or even more important, where to go... (Using the same voice-command system).

So no to fancy coronas and (dis)appearing (flashing) lights...

Sure they can. An ATARI Engineer owns the patent of "Ghost Cars", so every single racing game out there has to buy the right to use it... And it is not just the name "ghost Car", but the idea to basically drive against a replay of yourself or someone other.

Ehhh I don't know I find that hard to swallow. What does every FPS maker also have to pay John Carmack for permission to use a first-person weapon perspective?

In that specific case, no, since Carmack is against software patents, and right now nobody can file a patent for it. You know about any games with mini-games during load screens? Can't think of any, and it's a pretty nice idea, but some prick has a patent for it.

(substitue fire team, for squads mates) Ok here is one for you, that I am sure everyone would hate it.

You have a squad of four and have your timer set to 40-50 secs on death, but if the whole squad dies they spawn together 10 secs after the last person is killed.

That means you squad spawns together, and may even get used to fighting together.

Also you alway have to spawn at your squad leaders chosen spawn area.

i would also like to see a camera view of only your squad mates rather then everyone in your team.

On viewing of enemy and communicating, I do think, you cannot beat BF-2 spotting of enemy and call system it is so easy, highlight and click bingo on the map, I use it all the time to help my team out.
