Get a hold of Cross of Iron Danix. It is a must view for any self respecting war movie fan!!! And yes that is a great scene from Stalingrad, unfortunately, there is not enough of this sort of thing in the film. Still a great movie, but it could have been doing with a shitload more battle scenes than it has, it is about the bloodiest battle ever fought after all. I think there is still room for another film about Stalingrad and I wish to god someone would make it!!

Apocalypse now - but somewhat like a horror movie set during a war.

Fail Safe - deserves a mention for tension- a cold war movie (the serious flipside of Dr Strangelove, made same year i think)

Favourite WW2 Das Boot phaps
I agree Johnny555 I remember Cross of Iron being excellent- but been a few years for me too, must watch it again.

I will sit through and enjoy almost any war film, regardless of quality to be honest.
However though I appreciate how popular it is, I was not happy with saving private ryan.
No denying the impressive ferocity and effects of the battle scenes; and the clout of the powers that be in landing the 15 rating (UK)

I felt the rest of the film was utterly dire. I am not nitpicking about possible silly inaccuracies of equipment or unrealistic fighting etc. , for me something about this film was just wrong.
And as for the needless swipe at Monty- was Ted Danson's line something a lot of people wanted to get off their chests, and immortalise in film?

I have probably said it before, but Ken Burns 'Civil War' is imo the best war movie of all time.If documentaries count.

If you have not seen it, you are doing yourself a disservice. Rent/Buy it now.

It is nearly impossible for me to attempt to try and pick my favorite war movie. Perhaps if there was opportunity to share my top 5 picks I could limit it to that.... sadly, there is not.

Downfall: For the insanity and delusion of war.
Come and See: For showing the loss of innocence that happens to all people in war - combatants or not.
Enemy at the Gates: For showing that those who flew red, white, and blue flags weren't the only ones who stopped the German machine.
Das Boot: For the tragedy and pointlessness of war.
Lord of War: For showing that death is a commodity.
Apocalypse Now: For the surreal nature of its presentation and for letting us know how napalm smells in the morning.

A much overlooked war film... 'The Beast' set in Afghanistan during the Soviet Occupation. though the five man Soviet Tank Crew is not realistic... we all know Soviet Tanks have auto-loading. Still a entertaining flick.

That flick is starring T-62 (Actually T-55, see the gap between the two frontmost wheels), which has no autoloader.
