ladies, gentelmen, annoying children and specimens.

Im fairly sure ive seen more suggestions for weapon addons in other games, but this is very likely close to a tie. everthing from heavy .50 calliber rifles, to mauser c96's; and the thought came to me, TWI will never get around to making even 5 of these suggested weapons. to top that off some poor sob somewhere where will probably make a mod, however with mods, there turns out to be many different mods which cannot all be played at once and the player base gets divided depeding upon which weapons you like. so with all that blathering and explaining done, why not set up some kind of player submission of weapons. now I know this is a sticky issue because of who 'owns' the models made, and code written, so for simplicity everyone bite the bullet and sign off ownership to TWI in exchange for your names being in credits, or in the weapon description. ( "this aa12 full autoshotgun donated by you" )

I am just curious of two things; the first being if TWI would consider working with their community to make this happen. the second being if the community would mind throwing their collective efforts together to make some of these weapons.

within the reason that TWI provides a list of weapons they will accept, people can ask about other weapons, but for the most part the list of acceptable weapons would be what was being looked for.

Of course this entire idea hinges upon TWI's stamp of approval, as its most likely that texture/model, code, animation or skeleton tweaking would be required on the part of TWI, the community could however cut the ammount of work needed to add any particular weapon by an easy 50%.

yes, i would like to see more community involvement with tripwire having the final say of course. but some issues such as exclusion might arise in which certain ideas are rejected. i'm not against a screening process, but some people might take offense to that.

and if this were to happen, i think there should be established criteria to determine what gets submitted, so people don't waste time doing all this planning only to be disappointed.

the main reason i think this is necessary is because mod support for this game is somewhat lackluster, and the only way we can see some great ideas is if content is made official.

i would even support meeting them half way. say creating a model, with much revision and input from the community, then posting it here for approval. pardon the wishful thinking attitude.

Everybody who talks about this topic misses the one most important factor - gameplay.

It's great to have a slew of new different-looking weapons, but if they're all functionally the same what's the point?

It doesn't matter if you get an AK

*bumpy*

irritant, you might have been missing the point. more weapons does add a flavour to the game, even if their purpose is similar, hell all the weapons are used to kill zeds, so why dont we only have a knife?

that nitpick over with, the purpose of this thread was to provide the idea, for a system which would allow TWI to provide the very unorganized modders in the community with a list of what was wanted. billy makes the model and uploads it to the FTP, somone at TWI looks over it for 10 minutes and gives it the stamp of approval, then puts it back up on the FTP for anyone to download and add a skin or animations to. or however TWI would like to do it. we know TWI is interested in adding weapons (ahem upcoming patch?!) but we also know they probably arent going to have the time to make many more weapons, so if the community can cut some of that work time off we stand a chance of getting even more.

secondly the reason to make it official is because there are no organized mod teams, and any mods made adding a few guys stand the chance of being played by few in the community, getting them into official materail means they are available for all, in all servers.

I do like this idea, though of course, it comes down to tripwire. They could also add an option to servers (or the players could) for a "pure" server, with no additional weapons, and servers with additional bits.

I liken the argument against too many guns, to characters in killing floor
. There are three soldiers, two cops. The primary difference between them is their choice of head wear (or lacktherof) and uniform. The additional models serve no purpose, in terms of game play. Everyone could be the same guy, and there would be no detrimental effect, or positive effect to playing others. It's just flavor, and it's something I've not heard any complaints about.

Of course, I could always simply state that in games with a variety of options for weapons (rainbow six, CoD) I have never, ever, heard anyone complain about being able to choose from such an array of armaments, and that most people seem to enjoy being able to find or make a favorite out of their options.

P.S.

Another idea could be a competition like the grind house for weapons and character skins.

I don't think Tripwire would be adverse to fan based submissions as long as the content met the quality of the rest of the game.

Hmm, I'm no expert at the SDK. I can't skin or make weps. I guess it ouldn't be too hard for an experienced modder to make it up to KF standards.

Hrm...quality eh?

Well, I know there's a few people out there who have already constructed a 50.cal sniper, and a machine pistol. As far as the quality of them...who can say....

so generally, would it make sense for me to start creating for example a dragunov? It would be pretty cool if someone from TWI would answer, and if he would say:" sure it would be possible, we need this, and that..." or else simply no. Because there are alot of people willing to do alot of work to support further updates.

Soooo..what's the best way to get confirmation?

No offense yoshiro, but it doesn't much sound like you're 100% confident, and that's a lot of work to go through for a "maybe" or "likely".

Is it possible if players were to produce something, and offer it, that we may get an offical "yes, we can add this?" ? (There are already a few bits in the modding thread) Or is it possible to have a 100% answer, and perhaps some regulations and necessities set in stone for people to follow?

Content comes first. There are already avenues in place to officially endorse/promote user content ingame (news tab) and with Steam (listed mods). TW has done this with RO mods so the chances are just as good w/ KF.

There are alot of things that would go into this. Like Zynthenic has mentioned, in the past with RO we made several community maps (from that mapping contest) part of the standard package, as well as helped two of the mods become available on steam itself for download.

Now as to other content (gametypes, weapons, player models, zed models), yes the creator would have to make them first, show they work, show they are popular. Then comes the questions: Does this content fit in with what Tripwire has envisioned for the game? Is it fundamentally flawed? Does it fill a role that is not currently filled, or perhaps fill a currently filled roll better? What does the author of this content expect out of it (money? publicity? his name in the bright lights?) Does this content infringe on any copyrights? Who will own this content (tripwire or the creator)?

Questions such as these make the situation a tad complicated. However if all of the above are good then, while I can not speak officially for Tripwire on such a matter (tis above my pay grade), I see no reason why Tripwire wouldn't be interested in adding such content to the game.

Thanks yoshiro!

After four years active duty, I certainly understand pay grades, and the lack therof, however, the information you provided is quite a bit more specific...I took the liberty of linking this thread over in general mod, so mayhaps some people will catch on to the idea.

yeah yosh as i said in the original post, the maker would get their name put in the weapon description ( in store you click on it and in description it says made in part by *modeler*,*texturer*,*anyoneelse*) and the maker agrees to give it to TWI, so the whole property thing is somewhat skirted.

the second purpose of the OP was for TWI to put out a list, that list would state which weapons they would accept, so that no players make weapons that have no chance of being ingame.
at each stage the model could be inspected for quality. IE i make a model, i send it in, its checked to see if it meets standards. then an animator or skinner can dl the model and do their thing, then once again its checked.

A "wanted" list isn't going to happen. An item like this would be opening up situations where a Cow was asked for, a 3 day old burger was given, and then the ensuing drama over why no one wants it ;)
Which is why I say again, content comes first. Like Yosh, I don't have the final word on this but I can say that in every situation where a community contribution has made it's way into a commercial product it has always been "don't call us, we'll call you". Killing Floor's development history is a good example. Mods are made because it's (mostly) fun and they're fun to play. Commercial or not, whatever happens, happens but if this is your primary goal/concern when working on mods then you're doing it for all the wrong reasons. Just have fun making stuff, that should be all that matters.

Here's an example of the kind of justification I think should be written for any new weapon request.
I'd like to see a sub-machine gun.
- A higher rate of fire than the bullpup, and a higher ammunition capacity.
- Each round similar in damage to the 9mm, but the SMG fires a minimum of 3 rounds at a time.
- The SMG should have considerably higher spread than other weapons, save the shotgun.
- Ditto on the recoil. This is a great weapon for filling the air with lead, at the cost of accuracy.
- Moderately priced - less than the bullpup, more than the hand cannon.
- Moderate weight - less than the bullpup, more than the hand cannon.
- Can be dual-wielded, but is extremely inaccurate when doing so.

That is literally impossible..........HandCannon already costs more than the Bullpup
I have been opting for a machine pistol though. 3 round and fully auto fire-modes, 4 slot weight, similar 9mm damage, though I'd rather only have the option to only have one wielded at a time, with around the same ammo as bullpup and keep it rather accurate. You may also be forgetting that once someone hits commando level 5, all their SMG/Assault Rifle recoil is reduced quite a lot and by a percentage too. That means that the more initial recoil it has, the more of a change there'll be., so it'll need to be nerfed a little, which for me was the non-dual wield. I personally want the Beretta 93R, since it'll match the 9mm.

It would be better, imo, if said fun was available to everyone, rather than specific servers, limited by ping, pass, or player base.
