The sewers of Leningrad.
To all the Fallout fans out there, we know Fo4, the last Fallout game Bethesda is licensed to make will eventually come out, and hopefully be the best so far, or at least as good as Fo3. Here's an idea I've had for a while....

The year is 2049, you are born in a town in central Massachusetts, maybe Worcester... your father works for *insert one of many Fallout sciency companies here* in the cryogenics department you age to the age of 3 when your brother is born, you see images on T.V. of the resource wars and of the last manned mission to the moon you grow up fearing the "New Plague" and wondering your Massachusetts town, getting familiar with it. When you turn 16,in 2075 you go to test for your license and Dad lets you drive the car home, where you could get into a fender bender and get into an argument with someone which could lead to a fight. October 23rd 2077, you're at home and get a call from your father, he tells you to drive you, your brother, and your mother, to remote location in the mountains, he called from a payphone. On your way you hear reports of the west coast being decimated. You meet him by a cave which leads to a large blast door. You find out that he has known about the incoming war for months, at least he has been paranoid to believe it was coming. You all file into the shelter where you notice stasis chambers. Minutes before the attack your father calls to you and says he is having trouble closing the exterior bast door (there are two) you help him tinker with the controls... then it happens a flash of blinding light... you're dragged into the interior by your father, who remains in between the 2 blast doors susceptible to radiation. You stagger into your stasis chamber as the ground shakes you lose consciousness and enter stasis. You awake in 2288? You wander around the bunker and notice your brother's chamber was opened 5(-8?) years earlier, you find various information about your father's research and causes and paranoid thoughts about the Great War, also some notes left by your brother. Your mother's chamber is unopened, only your father knew the code to open it. You gather supplies, including a Pip-Boy, a 10mm pistol, a radiation suit out of paranoia, and some other various things and supplies. You exit the bunker and walk down the road you drove up more than 200 years prior, possibly find a motorcycle that, with a high enough repair skill, you can put back into operation, also possibly come across raiders. Eventually you make it to your old town, now a Ghoul city, where your father is the leader, yes he is a Ghoul. You walk into the Saloon/bar where a traveling non-ghoul human band is playing "The Cave" by Mumford and Sons. You eventually meet with your father, he tells who however the town was created and what he did for the past 200 years. He can also tell you that your brother traveled west only a few months after he exited his stasis chamber (to Ronto, which is Toronto, Ontario where he becomes the leader of the city).

Capitol Wasteland BoS could be met with even with a Capitol Wasteland DLC, including the Lone Wanderer. Quick travel on the Erie canal through New York state to Ronto. Vehicles. A possible encounter with the Duchess Gambit, and whatsherface who becomes the captain after Fo3's Point lookout. Aswell as some interactions with the Institute and the railroad, and even the possibility of super mutants being released from a BoS convoy from the Capitol Wasteland to the institute, for research, and Capitol Wasteland DLC where you can finally put an end to the Super Mutant presence.

Just my idea. I think its an awesome start, but whatever Bethesda wants.

When Skyrim comes out hopefully we'll get some info on Fo4.

Thoughts? Comments? Ideas?

All I can say is I wish Bethesda and their big boy penises would stay away from the franchise forever. They could at least have the decency to call their puerile fan fiction interpretation of Fallout something else and leave the former brilliant works of art alone. I guess the license is too good to pass up though.

I never got the chance to play the original 2 or any spin offs but I think I would prefer the Fo3 and FoNV format better. But I do understand the story and what not since I've read just about every scrap of lore. I was just shootin out since a focus on an area where so many rumors and lore appear in the recent games, especially Fo3, before Interplay releases and CAN release their MMO Fo game.

P.S. The first Fo game I played was Fallout 3 and then playing NV I was like "OMG SUPER MUTANTS KNOW HOW TO TALK?!!?" And my friend was like  since he only played NV and didn't play Fo3, or any others.

Less bugs, shorter loading times and better character models and I might not rush through a new Fallout game again like I did with the previous two because I was frustrated.

Yeah, although Vegas came close in places to recreating the Fallout universe but ultimately it suffered from the same problems as F3. F3 was effectively Oblivion re skinned, same bad writing, side quests and characters that don't belong in the Fallout universe.

They aren't terrible games and are still enjoyable if you play them for what they are and try not to associate them to the previous two games :)

I really tried to love Fallout 3 because I didn't want to be a grumpy old vet whining about how Fallout was now an FPS, because I really wasn't bothered by it. Fallout is a theme, not a game type, I was ready to roll with it.

My first bad experience was with the G.O.A.T. I felt that the writing for the questions was trying real hard but not quite getting the tone right, but I convinced myself the rest of the game would be awesome because the Fallout universe is awesome. Ok, so murdering my way out of the vault felt a little nuts, but hey it is the tutorial level and they need to introduce combat somehow. Once the game starts it will be an awesome Fallout roleplaying experience!

Things just got worse and worse after that. Blowing up Megaton is the evil archetype choice to make and being evil is awesome herpa derpy derrrr! Brotherhood of Steel are awesome knights in sweet looking armour and they are ridding the world of evil and helping the people! No really, because they are a different chapter than the west coast BoS. Raiders kill people and decorate their homes with intestines because raiders are very evil and twisted because...

Oh, and you can build a portable nuke launcher because science is AWESOME. Booyah! How's ya penis hanging, bro?

As if the horrible dialogue writing and enthusiastic but misguided voice acting wasn't enough to ruin the roleplaying experience already.

Fo3 was definately not super lore freindly, they got a lot of things wrong, and they knew that, else they woulden't have tried to retcon all thease things, and come up with more or less weak reasons for "this is why it's different in Fo3 than you remeber from Fo1 and 2".
I guess it's to their credit that they actually tried to retcon, instead of just plain getting it wrong and giving no reason as to why, it shows that they atleast knew the source material, but still, there was no good reason why a lot of thease things coulden't just have been made more in line with the game's lore in the first place (you know, other than them either not having the time, inclination or perhabs talent to do so, and it probably comes down to one or more of thouse 3 reasons).
On the whole it was a good game if you looked past the technical difficulties (the bugs, ohh the bugs and the glitches! SO MANY!), but it wasen't a good fallout game, it was Oblivion with guns.

But New Vegas is quite a lot better, really it is, much better writing and sidequests, much more lore freindly, and it much better captures the humour and atmosphere of fallout aswell, it's vastly improved (and with the right mods it can be damn awesome), just not on the technical side.. ohh the bugs! THE BUGS AND GLITCHES! SO MANY!!! Bit fewer bugs than in Fo3 though..

But damn that engine is killing the game, it just doesen't work for this, at all, even on the Consoles thease games are crashing and glitching, despite that beeing on identical hardware configs..

Supposedly Fo4 will be on the Skyrim engine, and i just hope that pans out better, but also supposedly, it's BethSoft who's back to doing the writing, and not Obsidian who did NV, so be afraid, be very afraid of crappy sidequests!

New Vegas definitely felt a lot more like the originals. And the different factions, all which had their pros and cons, were interesting.

Still need to finish it, im only about 50 hours in.

So sick of Big Iron though !

Definately, though it's not without it's flaws (some moral choices are a little too black and white, it could have benifitted from some more grey areas, grey is such a pretty colour), it is massively improved, and has much better writing and quests throughout, and more importantly, no real stinkers like Tenpenny Tower..

I hope BethSoft took notes, because that's the direction they need to go, definately.

Ahh yes, and that is why i turn off every radio i come in contact with that i can. Dev's, don't include radio stations in your game if you can only license a handfull of songs, it's bad, not good at all, bad.

I tried Fallout 3 once, the felt the movement of your character I was thinking "wtf is this ****!". Being able to walk around like a rabid vibrator isn't my cup of tea. Even Quake 4 did better with that.

but.. but.. I got spurs.. and they jiggle jangle jingle!

Also, to be fair, I could probably lambast every person that loves FO but never played Wasteland.. IP changes and evolves.. take it or leave it.. I enjoyed Fo3 and FoNV.. where they Wasteland or FO1/2? Nope.. but it was familiar enough with some similar elements.. and I was OK with that.

Some of you may have already watched these vid's, but.. I thought they were pretty interesting and fit the topic somewhat.

A series of 3 video interviews where Tim Cain talks about Fallout (it's beginnings, and post success), his nicely edited thoughts on FO3, Arcanum (which I happen to be re-playing right now), and an MMO he's been working on for the last 5 years..

Matt Chat 66: Fallout with Tim Cain, Pt. 1 - YouTube

Matt Chat 67: Fallout with Tim Cain Pt. 2 - YouTube

Matt Chat 68: Arcanum and More with Tim Cain - YouTube

At points in the interview his comments (unintentionally) highlight the divide between those that are in the gaming business to make money, and those who are trying to create lasting experiences via the avenue of quality and innovation; deep ideas unhindered by the arbitrary ROI business-leash (or 'cage' if you like). There's an inkling in there of how decisions are made on the business side by people who arent even gamers to begin with that effect the richness of the overall experience.

That third video there sums up my gripes about fallout 3.

I loved Fallout 3's gameplay (I put many many hours into the game), but the story elements and many key elements of the setting itself are just outright silly, the main quest writing was cheesy and copypasta from previous games and it seems that people have too much spare time on their hands, as if living in a post apocalyptic wasteland is some sort of easy job that does itself..

To be honest, a whole lot of the game really did feel like oblivion with guns because the entire setting is basically a fantasy, wheres fallout 1 & 2 have a more gritty, dark and bladerunner/madmax-esqu science fiction dystopian feel to me. (combined with the hilarious dialogue)

I'm half hoping that both bethesda and obsidian (and likewise, the ex-Black Isle employes at obsidian) work on Fallout 4. It's hard to argue with bethesda's art department and general manpower, but I'd much rather have Obsidian write and shape most of the setting, story and atmopshere. I felt like New Vegas was a much better game in just about every sense. IMO most of New Vegas's deficiencies lie in technical issues or generally poor content qaulity (in some areas) but overall its a better experience and is much like the older franchise.

Got no problem with Bethesda making Fallout 4, but I hope (if they are making it alone) that they make more of an effort to have it a true Fallout game, and do so without bastardizing the series. Seeing todd howard's commentary on Fallout 3, I can see they legitimately like the series and were excited to work on it, but they tried too hard to make it a fallout game (rather than have it just be a fallout game) and they missed the big picture in the end.

I liked Fo3 better than NV (maybe because I'm from the east coast idk...) but I don't think the setting should be back in the Mojave area. Just I wan't to see how different terrains and cities were effected. I may have some sort of obsession with the commonwealth because that's kinda where I live.

Not that i've got a massive rpg experience but i've found lack of subtlety and sophistication in moral choices to be pretty much par for the course for most games of this type i've seen, even really good ones like KOTOR.

But then i guess you can say that lack of subtlety and sophistication of writing in general is what we happily seem to accept in games anyway.

I really like the new Fallouts, but the spirit just isn't the same. I feel like it would have been better if they'd just made it an entirely new IP, but familiar names sell.

I'd really love to see a Fallout set in China next, IIRC one of the devs of the first two games said he'd be interested in making a Chinese Fallout.
