Fallout 3....

As a person who absolutely loved the first 2 Fallout releases, I'm disappointed to see the name picked up by Bethesda. It wasn't the graphics that made Fallout great. It was the whole package- storyline, nonlinearity, content, etc. I don't expect Bethesda to come up with anything like the original Fallout feel. It's more likely they'll produce some repetitive piece of crap FPS "role player" with some pretty graphics and cash in on the Fallout name.
While I totally understand where you are coming from, but at least the trailer demonstrates that bethesda is able and willing to at least give homage to the original flavor of Fallout. Of course I expect changes, but only time will tell if the final package remains true.

They already got the music that Interplay couldn't get for the first Fallout, and the team Bethesda put on the project is the same one that made Oblivion(not sure how large Bethesda is, it may only have one team). I think the voice acting is going to have just as many, if not more, big names that the first two games had.

Its not like Bethesda is blind to the absolutely entrenched, bloodthirsty hardcore community that Fallout has. They know that someone will actually be murdered if they screw up.

Let's start counting discontinuities.

For one, why is the Brotherhood of Steel, which was no further east than Nevada, in freakin' Washington DC?

Why is the Paladin removing her power armor in the field?

Why is the Brotherhood of Steel doing something? The Brotherhood of Steel doesn't do things, they sit about and make weapons. And they certainly don't hunt mutants. They're engineers, not soldiers! And they were on the verge of completely collapsing at the end of Fallout 2!

Don't you just love how the Super Mutants look absolutely nothing like Super Mutants?

What the f***!?

BOS is an army in Fallout Tactics and they certainly expand their territory by force in that game so they donn't just sit and make stuff and that might explain why they are in Washington DC:confused:

It's after the events of FO 2 anyway. Anything could have happened.

Fallout Tactics was so poorly received that Black Isle said it wasn't canon by any stretch of the imagination.

The Brotherhood of Steel was a very, very small organization. It started when a small military unit(a company? I don't remember its initial size), lead by a Captain, and their families went on an exodus to the Mariposa military base. When command of the unit passed on to the Captain's son, it officially formed the Brotherhood of Steel.

The Brotherhood is made up of three branches. The Scribes catalog old knowledge and expand upon it, they're the professors. The Knights are the engineers of the Brotherhood, they manufacture weapons and ammo, which is what they used to trade with the Hub merchants and why firearms are so widespread while pre-war firearms are so rare and expensive. The third branch are the Paladins, the people who wear the Power Armor and wield miniguns. They're the smallest branch and only serve to protect the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is not meant to be police and they are not meant to keep or restore order. Their only purpose of the preservation of technology, that's it.

The second argument is against the Brotherhood's inability to fight offensively. The leadership is so weak that it leaves the Brotherhood crippled as a fighting force. In both Fallout games, the Brotherhood, the people with the best weapons and armor in the known world, are completely unable to fight both threats, requiring the help of an outsider. At the end of the first Fallout, it is said that the Brotherhood fades into the background of northern California, openly spreading its technology to all and becoming a research & development house in the newly formed New California Republic. They do help drive the mutants out, but they do so in small, limited combat engagements while making a strong effort to minimize casualties on both sides.

The third argument against this is the Brotherhood schism. In between the two Fallout games, there was a schism between factions that caused an exodus among many Brotherhood members. The Eastern Brotherhood leaves Mariposa and heads east to Nevada, where it remains stagnant. The power of the Brotherhood is on a continual decline through all of this time, and the schism leaves the Brotherhood so weak that destruction by the Enclave was a very real possibility if the descendant of the Vault Dweller didn't come around. Fallout 3 takes place 35 years after Fallout 2, is it expected that, during this time, the Brotherhood went from a constitutionally weak research and development faction to the Army of the Wastes, spreading across 3/4 of the country with the sole purpose of fighting the evil mutant hordes? Come on.

Woo looks like it is at least semi turn based and has aimed shots like the originals

The Super Mutants don't look anything like Super Mutants! The armor looks very unarmorly(what's it supposed to protect? His washboard abs? It seems like that's the Metal Armor, what with the Tesla rod attractors on the shoulder pad, but what's the point of armor if it doesn't even protect the chest) and there just isn't any humanity left in them. The Fallout and Fallout 2 mutants were big, mean, and scary, but you never forgot that they were humans. The same with Ghouls. They've been exposed to radiation or FEV or some other deadly agent, and maybe their new form has given them a megalomania, but they were always human, and their faults were always human.

This is a Super Mutant. His name is Harry.

Complaining about pointless armor in fantasy titles is a waste of energy.
Who wasn't struck in awe when he first met half naked barbarian vixens in the icy highlands?
Who didn't like navel showing "armor" on female Neverwinterians?
Who ever thought about how stupid those uber-shoulder plates on almost every "better" piece
of armor in every rpg actually are?

Except that the Fallout series never did that. If it didn't contribute to the retro-future wasteland setting and didn't have a reason for being there, it wasn't there.

I'm pretty sure the mace he's using is from Oblivion. Can we say "placeholder art"?

Even if it isn't, it actually covers more than some of the Fallout armor. The chest is a bit under protected, but that's about it.

EDIT: by the way, protecting the abs is kind of important since there are major organs behind them. :p Not as critical as the chest, but getting gut shot isn't fun.

One of the Bethesda plants on NMA let out a bit of information that he shouldn't have. Unless there's a major engine overhaul, there's not going to be any branching dialogue trees, like the ones from the past two games. Bethesda's not going to do that.

I'm sure there will be, because we already know you can talk your way out of differend situations.
Remember that it won't be released until next year's fall.

I may still support the game once more previews start coming, and if they listen to the community and drop the ****ing orcs for actual Super Mutants. However, in the preview Bethesda is giving the impression that they're trying to say "Hey, look at how we improved since Oblivion", not "Hey, look at how we made a proper sequel to Fallout 2".

My final reaction will be judged by how Bethesda responds to the Fallout community. The developers who made Brotherhood of Steel didn't listen to the Fallout community and the game failed miserably. It failed to the point where you can hardly call Interplay a company anymore. However, EA decided to listen to the Command & Conquer community and C&C3 was incredibly well received.
