So how does Fallout 3 compare to the previous 2 games, gameplay-wise?
Is it what Oblivion was to Morrowind?
I don't know about Oblivion and Morrowind never really captivated me, but this...
this is the shi7, man. I've played the original Fallout a little, played Fallout 2 to death and now this - this is a totally worthy sequel. You just have to give it some time - I loved the childhood tutorials, was mildly amused by the first moments outside, but the game grows on you as you find out more and more and see how much love the devs have put into it.
On Bethesda forums you'll have tons of people *****ing about how the game is not Fallout, but seriously - if anyone who's played previous games and loved them and now has played this can say that this is
not Fallout, they need a head doctor. Let's see:
-"The SPECIAL game mechanics are fubar. This is NOT Fallout". Well, if game mechanics constitute the crux of the game for you, then yes, it's slightly different. But who cares about the mechanics of the game? If it plays right, it's gotta be right!
-"No memorable characters". What?! Have they even played the game?! Lemme just give you a couple names off the top of my head: Three Dog, AntAgonizer, Agatha, Dukov with his setup, the inexplicably Irish Colin, Vance (and Ian West also made an impression on me)... Seriously now, tons of them!
-"The game hasn't got any good writing!". Well, there's definitely some interesting vernacular out there - plenty of peculiar expressions and sayings to go round everybody. Plus, people are saying that in Oblivion you could
at least read books. Oh, come on! There's plenty of stuff you can read - just check out the computers! Reading on about the fluff made me freak out on Agatha's quest. Now that was some scary shiz! Which brings us to...
-"No isometric view". This, is just plain silly. I have to say that at first I didn't like the first-person perspective myself, because it meant I had to use both my hands and couldn't wank/ w/e with my other hand, but now I got to appreciate it. With previous Fallouts I always had this detached perspective, had the feeling of playing with little plastic figurines (well, the plastic renders of yore...) and I don't think there ever was anything that scared me. Now here, things can get really scary.
-"No humour". Well, I haven't seen any gags Fallout 2-style yet and apparently there's none. Well, maybe the naughty nightwear/ sexy nightwear thing comes close to that, that was totally absurd in a positive way. But other than that, there's tons of humour - just look for it.
-"Ending scucks". I wouldn't know about that one, but I can say that while the game lasts, I'm enjoying every second of it.
And one more thing - something that I missed in, for instance, Mass Effect: variety and depth. Here, there's tons of it. Locations, unique items, exploring the little details (like having this thing on or off will affect your talking, or having this or that will ... you get the picture).
I got it last week and I'm circa 35 hrs into the game. Barely got started on the main plotline, took my time to do some side quests and explore. Heartily recommend.
