Well, i mostly agree, BUT the main reason is, many weapons dont have flashlight. Also only zerker and commando have nightvision...
Lets wait for next update that will introduce new flashlight independent on what weapon you carry...

A real man's criteria for map quality:

1. Does this map look pleasing aesthetically? +1 for yes, -1 for no

2. Is this map consistently challenging? +2 for yes, no minus for no

3. Can this map be doorzerked / exploited? -1 for yes, +1 for no

4. Is this map able to be kited? +1 for yes, -2 for no

5. Is this map a blast to kite? +2 for yes, -1 for no

6. Is this map Steamland or Hillbilly Horror? +1 for yes, -1 for no

TWI, follow this survey and make more Steamlands. The howls of wiping groups must fill the air.


ON TOPIC THOUGH: Catacombs suffers from what I would call "piecemeal design flaws". Some of the sections are very nice, while others cause tooth-breaking rage simply from attempting to shoot my way through them. Other than that though, I find it enjoyable and challenging, which is what I look for in a map.

I really like catacombs, but my vision isn't that great in the first place, when all the lights get broken I might as well turn off my monitor ):
Just whip out nuke and you're fine without a monitor :p

People don't like dark maps because they are hard in a way that feels unfair.
Hard in a way that feels thrilling.
I like Catacombs.
The only current map I don't like right now is Bioticslab, but that's entirely because of all of the broken flickering screens that annoy me. (With all my INI tweaking, I haven't found any way to disable the broken screen flickering.)

Psssh I can't get much done as demo. My main is firebug, and while flaratov cocktail helps immensely with the dark, dark just really messes me up. I'm so bad at seeing in the dark that my eyes just kind of 'nope' when there's not enough light.

Change hold out location into a brighter environment.

Pfft i love catacombs. It has one of the best team camping spots in the entire game on those stairs. Just weld the sewer doors and stand on the stairs near spawn in that small room and hello KF1 days =3 :p

Zed teleporting + catacombs = :mad:

The map itself was tastefully designed and would otherwise make great fun if not for it highlighting that one mechanic so vehemently.

People hate catacombs because it's not only dark but it's very cqc, and the combination of both makes it very hardcore, meaning any mistakes are punished far more severely than other maps.

Maps themselves have embedded difficulty, like in KF1 there were extremely difficult maps like KF-Grevona or KF-WretchedV1 or KF-Arcade-Hardcore-FIN which required a lot of skill and teamwork to finish (even with the OP BS weapons), and then there was... KF-Doom2E1M1-Iswearthisoneisharderbutnotreallyv3fixedv5whitelisted45 .

Guess what kind of maps were played in most of the servers?

People nowadays don't like to be challenged, don't like to be beaten, and don't like a difficulty level they can't casually stroll through.

Dark maps offer very interesting gameplay possibilities, unfortunately very unexplored. There were really interesting "LightsOut" maps in KF1 where they weren't just dark - they were pitch black - forcing flashlight gameplay, which affected the choice of weapons/classes/etc.

Sadly, in a "drop in/out anytime" style game, it's hard to achieve higher levels of teamwork.

If you don't like the map choice, vote with your presence, as I do. It's the only thing you can do.

I don't like dark maps. Either I'm using high gamma settings and flashlights, which almost mitigates the whole dark thing, or I don't see crap and feel annoyed.

Nothing wrong with any of the maps imo. I think most ppl think a map is bad if they cant ace it, going straight to hoe and from every conceivable camp spot - immediately...

It almost seems like ppl have this inner-complex where by anything difficult is bad.

I remember a time when maps like Hospital Horrors, Wyre, Filths Cross and SEL (to name but a few) where really difficult to beat on KF but you just kept playing and when things clicked well all that hard toil just made it worth it...!

Chances are that both "worst" maps got that title due to how cramped they are (as already mentioned), and - especially in case of Catacombs - how little there is flat areas where you can just stand and grab easy headshots.

This seems more reasonable of a reason then blaming it on the darkness. Catacombs may be a little darker then other maps, but i don't think people dislike it due to that. It just seems like a more challenging map, since it is very different from other maps.

I am not even surprised that the easiest maps are the most popular maps. Both Evac Point and Paris are very open maps so the kids and the noobs can run away if the **** hits the fan instead of stay and fight like a man even if they die.

The harder maps are more fun but some people are afraid to have fun. They just want to shoot things and win every time. I remember in Zombie Panic Source - A VERSUS game, when someone made a map called Armory or something. Long story short the survivors were given all the weapons and the zombie players were shot to death through the whole round but LOTS of people still played that **** knowing that even if they spawn as a zombie they will get to play as survivor eventually and get their share of shoot the ****ers.

I actually like catacombs and have gotten used to the lighting. It is a challenge. It is like clandestine in the first game. Everyone hated it because it was so ****ing hard!

I've played with OP in the past and every time took away that he/she is not a skilled player at all. Things like getting killed by clot grabs and not trying to bash out.

We don't really care what your opinion is.
