So hows everyone liking the game? I've been thinking of picking it up lately since I'm totally burned out on TF2.

Go for it, I'm playing both TF2 and ETQW, they make a nice couple.
Just add a pinch of RO and you have a happy meal !

At 5:00PM CST gamespy shows ET:QW with 9268 players and 2142 with 9216 players. RO has 1356.

QW is alive and well it seems. The latest patch has really given a boost to the player numbers.

There are some maps that are really hard to win as attacker, but none that are impossible. Usually there's a turning point, like taking the beach as Strogg on Volcano. After that it's really hard to hold the next two objectives. SD has rebalanced some of the maps in the 1.2 patch tho. Refinery as GDF is really really hard in 1.1 haven't played it in 1.2.

Well obviously it's more popular than RO :) I think something is b0rk3d with GS numbers though. Or perhaps they managed to fool GS stats into counting bots in the last version or something. Check the www.game-monitor.com for much more reliable, and much lower ETQW numbers. Or just check the in game server browser........

Or just check how many of us here on RO sub forum play the game, as compared with other games at the moment.......

They didn't rebalance the maps per se in 1.2, they just tweaked some weapons (and the tweaks were very minor IMO - I wouldn't even notice without reading the 1.2 notes).

Don't get me wrong, I love ETQW, I am curently ranked among top 2% of ranked ETQW players, so I obviously play it a LOT (I do). I would recommend people to buy the game. Technically it's almost perfect - no bugs, no crashes at all.... Having said all that I remain critical of some elements of the game, and laugh at the fanbois who think this is, oh so much better than BF2 or 2142! (it's neither better nor more popular, not by a long shot).

As for the popularity, this time last year, with similar amount of effort and time, I was ranked around 60k-70k-ish place on BF2142 board (top 20% back then I would say), on ETQW board I am currently ranked 2.500 (top 2%).

My office buddy bought the game, NEVER played one whole round - he has 18 XP points TOTAL and is still among the top 50% ranked ETQW players - go figure. The game didn't exactly strike the gaming nerve....

Yes I believe QW is now fooling gamespy into thinking it has larger numbers. I guess it really doesn't matter considering you can always find an RO pub match even with the lower player count. I guess tend to root for id no matter what because I think Carmack is awesome, with the Linux clients and always open sourcing the previous gen quake code and whatnot.

As far as being better or worse than 2142, I played the demo and was very unimpressed, while being extremely impressed with Valley on the QW demo. That is the extent of my comparison. The 2142 weapons didn't seem particularly accurate or damaging. The color scheme was annoying. The vehicles just didn't feel right.

What's your QW handle? I'm SovietOrchestra (haha yes I am that dedicated to RO)

The one weird thing with the stats system in QW is that it actually makes me play less. I am less inclined to play late in the night, or after having a couple beers, because I can measure how much worse I play tired or buzzed. I don't play in any specific way to XP farm or statwhore, except for my win/loss and kill ratio, which aren't that amazing anyways.

I am Samsonov - my old war name from a RO Soviet realism clan (I guess this RO stuff has nasty habit of sticking with you as you play other games :D).

I think the accuracy stat is pretty pointless, and it's apparently very important to the developers. I mean - this is Quake after all. I shoot all the time, I shoot snow, air, shoot when we win, shoot when we lose, shoot to watch how beautiful my Strogg weapons are... etc. Apparently I ruin my accuracy stats with every shot I make :D to which I say LOL!

Well I picked up the game today and I'm currently downloading the 1.2 patch.

I don't know if you're supposed to include the tag or not but my game name is [YBT]JoshuaC or just JoshuaC.

I have 2142 and it's more of the same BF2 gameplay with new models and vehicles. What really appealed to me about this game was that it plays just like RTCW:ET with vehicles. They really are nothing alike.

Back when I was gaming on my old Geforce 2 on a Athlon 2700+ I used to play a lot of free games. I played the hell out of RTCW:ET and this game brings back that old fun I had with it.

Tell us what you think after playing for some time. Despite your previous experience with ET this game has pretty steep learning curve for an FPS....

Actually I feel quite comfortable with the game so far. I need to learn the classes and weapons but so far it's pretty awesome.

We need more maps & campaigns...and not just 3-map campaigns, but 5- or 7-map ones!
ET:QW doesn't have a very deep story-line, so longer campaigns are a bit better for immersion.

Once you get your skills up to vet-level, the stock maps become repetitive very fast.
Good thing that they're going to release the SDK very soon.

I'll second this, need more maps. But will they be ranked?

Oleg, had fun killing you a few times, even though you were on the winning team most of the time. One thing I found out playing on the German server is that QW is extremely playable at up to 200 ping, no noticeable lag at all.

Yea, I am working on my sniper medal, the basic one. I am terrible sniper and I hate non-sniping abilities of the sniper class (hacking & wtahever), but I want to get basic medals in all classes. Basically, doing it as sniper is a chore but I'll get those 600 XP points no matter what :D

My favorite classes are engineer and the artillery guy (whatever it's called officially). I also love the assault class (the first one) on maps where I can shoot vehicles with rockets or plant explosive charges. I'd love to see you kill me as engineer without dying many times from my deployables first :D

As for teams winning-losing - I hate being on a losing team but my ETQW formula is simple. Full 24 player server => play defense, unless some of my buddies or proven good players are all stacked on the offense. It's too frustrating to play offense with n00bs and clueless pubbers on a fully populated crowded server. 16 player server => play offense and kick some ***.

(For those that don't know - 24 players is maximum ranked ETQW servers support. It does not sound like much but the action is very concentrated and 24 players is a HUGE crowd for ETQW.)

I think you joined when I was on small server (resulting in good playable ping even accross the ocean). I played dozen games in a row as offense, I think we won all of them.

Ehm Oleg, didn't you hate the hell out of this game a few pages ago. Not that I care about this game.

Check again, I saw the light and changed my mind at the bottom of Page 3 of this thread LOL :D

However.....

One certain way to get me started is to compare ETQW with BF, ridiculing the Battlefield series. In fact I got into several flame wars here and on ETQW boards because I felt it's utterly stupid when ETQW fanbois ridicule BF.

All things considered, BF2142 is simply a better game. Better designed, richer, deeper, more popular.... It was also released more than a full year earlier than ETQW so there's no question as to which game copied the other. When ETQW fanbois start "ridiculing" BF it backfires - the real joke is on them. ETQW turned to be unpopular little game, too complex for some, too blatantly unrealistic for others.

There are many many flaws in ETQW design, and it would take couple hours (and all fun from this thread) to list them here.

Having said that it slowly grew to become my favorite MP FPS right now - which maybe says more about the MP competition and my thirst for MP games than about the game itself. To me, going back to 2142 is a non issue, because I got bored by it long ago and milked it for all it's worth. I still play RO and GRAW from time to time but they are something else. ETQW will be the mainstay of my MP gaming for some time, but I am mature enough to see it's flaws.

It's really hard for me to even see a resemblance between this game and BF2142. They are simply 2 very different games set in a futuristic setting.

Most of the various player counting websites have QW at between 7000 and 3000, the difference probably being the bots. Hardly unpopular, perhaps not gangbusters popular, but the numbers are increasing every day.

I always come back to RO though.

One of the things I really don't like are hitscan weapons. Even Crysis is not going hitscan and I think that really points the way for the other FPS's out there (SHAME COD4!).

GameSpy includes bots and is thus very imprecise.

Check Game Monitor fur much more precise stats, numbers for ETQW are mediocre at best: http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php?game=etqw

There are tons of bots on servers. Bots outnumber real players at all times, even at peak times. Popularity-wise this game is a failure, though it's not something we, coming form a niche game like RO, should care much about
