the loading times are unnecesarily huge, and also the performance is quite bad for old computers, the second can be easily fixed by completely disabling grass and shadows, then you can set everything else to ultra quality without problem (Radeon x1950XT).

Then after each battle the game spends like a minute in some kind of crashed state. they seriously need to fix this and the loading times.

as for the game itself, I think it cool, it feels a bit better than Medieval 2, but there are some annoying things, like AI doing crazy stuff, like parking its general's body guard in some place far away from the battle and forget about it, set up spiked barriers while in the middle of the fight. and there is that thing when routing units wait to reload their weapons before running away

Actually i have been quite impressed by the AI reactions.
What i did was, i took my entire force to take the left flank, negating their tactical advantage on the right side.
What happened was their entire infantry force withdrew all the way to the back of 'their ground', near some small village, and they lined up.
When i moved my units forward, i had a classic line battle to the left of the village. The units fired at eachother over and over for a little while, and then i ordered my units to move in with melee, as i charged my Hussars into their left flank.
Some of my light infantry i sent around to the right of the village to end up behind the enemy lines, but they got assaulted and routed by the enemy general before they could kill him, but my main battle line was slowly gaining the upper hand in the main battle.
Some of the American forces then withdrew from the battle, taking refuge inside a nearby building, which had to be fought about, and which was quite a long battle. Unfortunately i didnt have my cannons nearby, so far i havent found a single good position for them yet: no matter where i move them, they get almost instant-hit by the enemy artillery.

Anyways, as i fought about the building, the enemy general withdrew back to their original defensive position, where the artillery was still going strong.
I sent my dragoons after him, before i reached him i had them unmount, and move further on foot. The General apparently didnt notice my forces at the bottom of his hill, because my dragoons moved in, formed a line, and in 1 burst shot the general and his entire bodyguard (or what was left of it anyways).
Meanwhile i had my remaining infantry units perform a quick charge on the remaining artillery batteries. They had the time for 1 accurate shot per cannon, cost me some units but thankfully not to much. The ensuing melee saw the Americans massacred, and the battle was won.
The game rated it as a close victory, as this was still my first turn, and i was figuring out how to best use my units, which units to put where etc. Still, it was a victory, something i cant say about my naval battle skills which turned into complete and utter raep for me

The next round i tried a full frontal assault, just to see how utterly massacred i would get. I marched some soldiers to the left batteries, and they got into range close enough to take out 1 battery. Meanwhile i had my other main line units move across the river, one of them taking out the right-side batteries with riflefire.
I lined up my soldiers across the creek, and let them fire 2 rounds before moving them into melee. While melee ensued, i ordered my cavalry units across the river and take up position on the left flank, and take out the remaining battery. Then i sent them into the main battle.
It was a costly fight though, as all but 2 of my units were routed. The remaining units (grenadiers and some other unit) i ordered back across the river in a long line.
Previously the AI wouldnt move, but without artillery to fire at my forces, they came across the creek. Again a new line battle followed, untill an enemy unit went into melee and assaulted my units. They were routed, and my units charged after them. In the process, a second American unit got caught, and seeing their routing friends, that battle was over fairly quickly as well. Now i had routed their entire defensive position, but unfortunately i didnt have enough units to clear out the remaining units who were guarding the long flank on the left, and my soldiers were all shot down
I tried the grenadiers grenade-option once though, it didnt seem very effectful. But then i realised that it could only have been because i tossed them into the river, and the grenades didnt explode! So i guess the fuses got extinguished, because only 1 grenade went off. Now that's nice attention to detail!

My jaw hit the desk the first time i saw the enemy connonballs bouncing through my infantry lines mowing down my men, also ammo is depleting pretty fast when the same regiment has to repel enemy attacks over and over.

So far i like the demo. I think the landbattles are awesome. The seabattle on the other hand seems a bit arcardish and chaotic to me.

Only thing that could be a real showstopper are the loading times.

Not tried the demo yet as Ive got a bucket load of work to do this weekend, but hopfully the long loading times are just 'demo related', I can remember quite a few times ( when demos were released before the actual release date  ) that loads times were drasticly shorter come the actual release.

I improved the load times slightly, though noticeably, by defraging. Steam had dumped the files all over my hdd despite there being plenty of space.

AI sucks as much as other TW games. Ive had enemy artillery walk right up to my lines, most of the times half the enemy units just idle and wait to be massacred. Not much challenge.

One funny thing that happened though was the very first cannonball barrage in the naval battle killed my admiral.

My impressions:
Tracer fire?? wtf... and you can't turn it off, talk about dumbing it down...
Runs ok though, on my GX280, had to turn it a bit down 'cause sea battles were killing the framerate.
Running at 1680 rez every icon and text is really small, so had to turn that down too...

And what on earth made them change the standard key setup for formations? Not that it matters, didnt seem to obey keyboard formation commands anyway.

If it gets released like this it's gonna cause a ruckus with the fanboys.
I'm sticking with M2TW for another six months to a year I guess :)

You can change controls back to the old style in options. There is a one click option I mean. ;)

Well I managed to finally beat the land battle today. Used the advised route that it shows you at the start. I'm really looking forward to this. Load times are long but they may sort that out in the final version. Still haven't sunk a ship though. that's my task tomorrow after I do some work.

This is the first RTS game Ive played where a unit can attack itself. If you have a horse cannon and you order it to attack a target behind it, it will rotate the cannon but they forget to move the horses! Make sure you deploy them correctly or your cannon is stuck in the same spot for the rest of the game.

i thought my arty could just walk through the stakes deployed on the ground, cause logically taken they are moving at walking speed and cant get hurt by sharp sticks, but no, as soon as the first horse touches the stake the whole crew instantly dies and even the cannons fall apart. :(
edit: i also used a stop watch to see how long it takes from starting, changing options (cause my changes are not saved the next time i load up the game) to actually playing the game..
the result was 7 minutes and 49 seconds!!

Yeah, thats one of the many small things thats anoying with the game, hell even in MTW2 you could walk horses through stakes...
