Searching for survivors.
Badass heroic sacrifice

The Japanese media have dubbed the elite squad of 180 technicians the "Samurai Warriors" and even the "Nuclear Ninjas" as they try to save their country.
I've always been in awe of heroic sacrifices. 180 technicians and firefighters have volunteered to remain behind at Fukushima to try and prevent a total meltdown at the plant. All of them know that they are going to die, and if they manage to live they will have severe health problems that will kill them later. Several of them have died already, yet they still remain.

May their sacrifice be enough.

Hmm it seems on the scale itself of the situation there is a lot of bs going around. Stories like that one there make it seem like all of those 180 people will die, where as the BBC's reporting suggests it to be a situation where very few will die due to the radiation...

Either way I'm sure those 180 know the fact they could die or suffer serious health problems, and for that they have shown their character over the 700 other plant workers who fled when radiation levels rose.

tbh with you the press coverage of this entire nuclear powerplant situation has been characterised by ignorance, hysteria, hyperbole and complete and utter BS.

This is what you get when you have a load of second-rate arts graduates (i.e. journalists) covering what is essentially a science story. Check my sig for further clarification.

It gets even weirder how they've managed to make top stories about fairly standard traintraffics which are common in Japan that "zomg they're crowded zomg nuclear plant caused this zomg [something]", it's quite insulting considering people still try to live their lifes there and do whatever they can to cope or if applicable, even help the people effected by the whole incident.

It's more to blame on the nature of the beast. It's the suits belief that their viewers need to have every last fart of information, verified or not, as quickly as possible. Since it often needs to be translated into a primary school level of understandting, all of the technical intricacy gets warped or cut out all together.

The above is a non-hyperbole explanation of the idiocy of the industry. :p (and why I'm not apart of it anymore)

The worst thing is that it rubs off to the public. There is nothing else where the perceived danger and the actual danger deviates as much as when it comes to nuclear power and radiation.

The fact is that driving a car is more dangerous (statistically) but people still sit their fat asses down in cars and drive every day.

When the Apocalypse comes, rest assured I will have plenty of ammunition for a browning M1919 and these self-righteous crazy assholes.
With all due respect (and I totally understand your sentiment) "we" aren't all like that... at all.

First Westboro Baptist now this.... it never ends :(.

Anyone who's actually praying for the deaths of thousands has seriously misinterpreted the gospel.

I'm hoping that she's being satirical though (in really bad taste I might add). Course I hoped that about Ann Coulter too .

Agreed, ann coulter also just got on fox or whatever to say radiation is good for you... ( no quantities given though, perhaps we should ship her off to live in pripyat?

Coal plants release 3 times as much radiation as nuclear plants, eh?

Those trace particles of uranium in the coal must really add up when you're consuming coal by the tons every day.

The media is really annoying me with their coverage of this, it's nothing but fear mongering and bull**** characterized by a complete lack of integrity.

As was said above this rubs off on joe public and sets the cause for nuclear power back. This is horrible in my country given that we have nothing but dirty coal plants and no conrete plan to get away from them.

Honestly, i think one of the mistakes in the reporting is using the Sievert system when talking about contamination, because most people have no bloody clue what it means, and it is not readilly explained. Hell, when i have seen it explained by people who work with radioactive materials every day, even they say there is confusuion about the system within the industry, where a lot of the workers still use Rads and REM because it's easier to use.

Just go with Rads, most people understand the Milli-Rad system.

But maybe that's exactly the point, the less people understand it, the easier it is to scare them.

More panic = More attention = More viewers = More money. They abuse every opportunity to make more money, even by telling lies about tragedies like this, which is why you should never ever listen to anything newspapers, TV or other "public" sources of that sort tell you.

I figured it's mostly radiation from Carbon-14.

Anyway, looks like more progress has been made. They've got the control rooms powered up, and can now monitor exactly how much core damage there was. They're working on inspecting and repairing the damaged systems to get cooling back to normal within a few days.

C14 has a half life of 5730 years, I doubt you find that in coal.

But Bluehawk was right coal power plants emit radioactive elements, did not know that. However most people "get" their daily dose of radioactivity from smoking.

And @Grobut I doubt anyone really here (or the public in general) knows how to use radiation units but they illustrate a relative danger/health risk.

You're right since coal is from biomass dead for millions of years, unless we're talking to Young Earth creationists...

2 seconds of Googling lead me to the US Geological Survey website, which had a page mentioning it's trace amounts of uranium, thorium, and their respective decay products (such as radium and radon).
