in this video, at 15minutes 18 seconds..
The DPM has a quick change barrel. Now i go check to be sure and i come to the conclusion that the DP's barrel CAN be changed....
Admitted, it is not as fast as the MG34's but that still is reasonably fast as you can see in the video...

so add it? or does the MG34 have to remain superior with all its fancy upgrades?

Well, doesn't the thing have to be able to overheat ingame first before this feature even becomes worthwhile ?

Also, the barrel might be relatively quick to take off, but unlike on the MG34 or MG42, it's not just the barrel that comes off on the DP28, it's the front gas plug assembly plus the flash hider. Also it was harder to assemble than disassemble this thing, mainly thanks to the rather high tolerance parts not always being an exact fit.

Observe from 5:30 min:
DP28 disassembly - re assembly - YouTube

Imagine having to do manhandle the thing like that in combat just to change a barrel.... then the MG34 & MG42 are a lot more trouble free.

Other than that I doubt that DP28 gunners normally carried a replacement barrel with them such as their German counterparts did, who often even carried two replacement barrels with them. And this mostly because the DP28 would rarely overheat, it simply didn't fire fast enough or for as long as the German MG's did (Belt fed vs magazine fed)

But the DPM is post-Stalingrad. They could still make the DPM a level 25 upgrade though, since... well you know, I won't say it.

notice how i said that i searched it up and the DP had the exact same system as the DPM

DPM wont fit, DT MG's would

Again though, what's the point of it when the gun doesn't overheat ingame?

Also it's a pretty tricky process to put a new barrel in, taking a bit of mandhandling to achieve. Furthermore I don't believe that Russian machinegunners even carried an extra barrel with them. mainly because it was hardly ever needed.

So basically we've got technical and historical reasons for not adding this.

Erm, what?

Are trying to say that TWI somehow favored the Germans ? In that case I couldn't disagree more.

Also the Germans didn't get anything extra that gives them an advantage, no instead TWI gave them a lot of extra useless stuff such as ZF41's on the G41 & Mkb42, and a saddle drum for the MG34. Where's their silenced pistols or 6x semi automatic sniper rifles that never existed though?

In short no side has been favored, but TWI severely screwed up in certain areas of their historical research. The features listed below should've never been added to the game:

1) Bayonets of sniper rifles = Because no sniper in his right mind would ever attach one, it simply didn't happen.
2) 6x scoped SVT40 & 4x scoped G41 = Because they never existed
3) ZF41 on the Mkb42 & G41 = Because it was more than just extremely rare
4) Silenced Nagant pistol = Because it was more than just extremely rare
5) Saddle drum for the MG34 = Because it was more than just extremely rare
6) MP40/II = Because it was more than just extremely rare

Mkb42 & AVT40 are fine as long as their are kept at 1-2 pr. map at most, and without their silly scope upgrades.

Im with unus offa on this one, i like that little list in particular. I think that historical and realism liberties were taken with both sides, but it does not really hurt the balance one way or the other.

I would much rather see a DT unlock than a barrel change on the DP.

Rare or not, there were still abundance of MG15 drums about that could be used with MG34.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like it either but double drums were far more likely to be around than some of the other items in your list.

No they could not, to accept the saddle drum you'd have to have a completely different top cover.

Furthermore the MG34 saddle drum (PT34) and MG15 saddle drum (D-T 15) are not directly interchangable.

"A D-T 15 will not fit on a MG34, but a PT34 can be used on a MG15. The PT34 is approximately 250 grams lighter than the D-T 15. Mostly due to a simplified spring mechanism."

I don't really see the point. The MG34 is already considered by many to be superior to the DP28 and the barrel changing makes sense for it. Having to change overheating barrels for the DP28 makes it even less appealing.

Don't get me wrong, i actually like the DP, but i am also aware of its short comings ingame. It doesn't need it's operation interrupt by swapping its barrel out.

Especially not when there is no need for it. I mean you'd have to fire the thing non-stop through a lot of magazines before a barrel change would be necessary.

In addition to this it was a rather cumbersome affair to actually change the barrel, being relative easy to take off but a pain in the butt to put back in. And then it's not even likely that the average Russian machinegunner even carried an extra barrel with him, atleast I have been unable to find any documentation or pictorial proof that they did.

Yep, i saw and agree. I just didn't see much point in simply repeating when it was said atleast twice in this topic already :)

Thats pretty cool, i knew about the top cover thing but this is new. Learn something new every day. Hey out of curiosity, where do you get your info Unus? Cause you tend to post some neat and well researched stuff.

In general it's from books or my own experience handling the weapons in real life (Bolt actions mostly), or from close friends who own and operate the weapons in question. In the case of the MG34 however it is primarily from close friends, books and/or trusted internet sites, seeing as I have only ever fired this weapon about 3-4 times myself.

The picture and small quote I posted in my other post was taken from here (a great site btw):

Nice, wish I got a chance to handle some more of the weaponry, I've only had the luck to try out the bolties, and a P08 Luger. But hey, California does that for firearms :(

That looks like an awesome site, gonna have to give it a read when I have some time, thanks man!
