Does anyone use bolt actions any more?

Unfortunately it depends a lot on your ping. That can have a bigger impact on your shooting than bullet travel time.

You could try aiming at their feet and looking for the dust kicked up by your bullet. How far behind the target that is will tell you how far in front you need to aim next time.

If this is truly the case, and tripwire haven't implemented any ping compensation, then that's digusting...

i don't play on anything higher than 80ms

Seriously, what's the point in adding ballistics for realism if it's tottaly destroyed because of pings, it just KILLS the immersion....

I only use bolts because you need a couple rifleman on roladder matches, and im one of them in my team =/

other than that, theres no point to it, as semis and autos will do a much better job at basically any given range and are always available.

loled hard at the dev talking about his score... guess what? youll do even better with any other weapon.

think i saw a post years ago in the RO forums - someone had made a picture showing how far ahead to aim if someone was runining.

You know the round bit that goes round the sight on the KAR.
Well if they sprinting you shoot when they are on the edge of the round bit - as in not in the middle.
Adjust for distance / speed. Once youve done it a few times -
ITS SO FREAKING SATISFYING
boo-yeah!
but you will have to adjust that if they closer or further away - but you soon get the feel for it.
GET SOME !

So, yes, at 85 metres I am required to aim ahead of someone?

Can you tell me roughly how far?

Half of the height of the player?
No you can't tell.
If you play on a server with a lowping (50-70) and preferably a tickrate of 40, you should only lead on by like half a meter, maybe a meter at that range.
Go to a server where your ping is around a 100 or it uses a standard tickrate and i nearly have to aim (+)2m in front of the running guy.

These variable make it 1, not very fun to play because it completely destroys the immersion in your realistic shooter since ballistics change from server to server.
And 2, make it very difficult to have a consistent performance. The first couple of kills you do in a server are just too see how the gun is gonna react this round
Even after doing a couple of testshots, you will be missing most of those distant shots simply because your simply guessing where to aim.

But as been said, nothing Tripwire is looking into apparently :/

If you really want an accurate rifle, with nearly sniper abilities, 32 rounds per clip and due to the rapid fire rate a lot more chance to hit? Take an MP40.
It's like a damn laser gun :')

I played bolts the other day for about 3 or 4 hours. Every match I was in the top 3 scoring players on the server (often times 1st). And even on maps like Apartments or Grain Elevator (attacking), not just large outdoor maps.

It's not about how difficult (or not) classes are, but amount of SMG and Semi auto weapons available in teams.

I play a lot of bolt action. I know that I could just use the Mkb 42, but I dont feel like it. In fact I never equip it, when I go assault it is MP40 or PPSh all the way. The aim of the game is fun, and I have more fun playing that way. And while I shot quite often by automatics, my feeling is that I get killed more often by submachine guns and bolts than assault rifles and semi autos.

There must be a way to get them to correct it, it really kills the immersion to know adjusting will differ from server to server :\

I tend to use a bolt action or an SMG myself, depending on the map and team composition. Personally I would love to see something like max 1 semi-auto per 10 players on the team or so. Or maybe 1 semi-auto per 5 bolt action rifles (and I mean players, not slots).

On a bit of a rant here: After all, if (going by Wikipedia numbers) every single g41 ever produced was sent to Stalingrad, it would still not be anywhere near enough to equip a large portion of the German soldiers there with it. While the SVT-40 was produced in larger numbers, there weren't all that many around in 42/43, as production was cut severely in 42 in favour of the cheaper, more easily produced and easily maintained MN. The total production in 42 would not have equipped 1/3 of the Russian strength at Stalingrad in early 43. As an aside, I'd actually be happier to see the Germans with the SVT-40, as they captured more of them than they ever produced g41s.

I gotta say, I've been seeing a lot of open assault slots lately. Elite rifleman is almost never open, but people seem to be gravitating away from Mkb/PPSh spam. The weapon that seems to be most extinct is the poor MP-40. It just can't stand up to that Mkb...

Either way, you won't catch me dead with anything but a bolt or LMG. I play for the challenge, and killing some semi-auto spammer with a bolt is rather satisfying.

I understand why people stopped using bolts. If sometimes I empty MP40 clip in one guy and it doesn't die, imagine a single bullet.

Can't speak for others, but I mostly ply on our 64 slot server. Quite often there is nothing left to choose from except a bolt action. No other choice. My experience with them has improved a little in RO2. When in a tight uraban environment like Stalingrad, the best use of them is to conceal yourself and hold territory. So I am totally focused on team points when using a bolt. It's not as fast paced, but it's realistic and wins rounds.

whenever i play ro2 (which isnt much lately, since i still have high ping issues), i choose the bolt action rifle. then i spawn, see that i joined just another "trololol, lets take away rifleman pistols for realisms sake, since they dont have enough drawbacks already"-server and switch to assault to get my ppsh drum-mag...

With a 10:1 kill ratio I bet.

Even though my favourite gun is the ppsh I do feel like there are too many automatics as well. I think part of the problem is that you get squad leaders + commander + default classes all using them.

The problem is if you lower the number assaults/elite riflemen you just get more people taking SL for the weapons and not bothering to smoke/spawn.

Maybe if the weapons where limited rather than the class, so SLs use bolt actions if the other weapons are taken and assault/elite rifle cannot be played if their weapons are taken.

I play bolts only, because RO is the game that made me love that weapon.
It's also a matter of principle. There are so many people running around with semi and fully automatic weapons, SOMEONE needs to counterbalance that.
Unfortunately i hardly ever see someone else using the bolt action rifle, though there were some servers where more people seemed to favor the bolt action rifle.
I do occasionally pick up an SMG if the situation calls for it, but i always start out with the 'standard' rifle (which unfortunately isnt standard at all).

I use almost only bolts, and usually be on the top of the ranking in most public servers...
In my clan we made a lot of "bolt only" games and it is real fun...

I only use bolts. I have never selected another class except for anti-tank once. I am new to this series and I love the bolt action.

I also think there are too many non-bolt guns out there me to have as much fun as I could be having with my bolt.

A common occurrence for me is I miss my first shot and then get blasted by an auto or a semi auto. What really ticks me off is the long range accuracy of the autos.

However, I also hate it when I miss the guy holding the semi auto and he fires back with 3-4 shots before I get my 2nd shot off and kills me after missing the first 1-3 shots. I just cant help but think if he had a bolt he would have missed his first shot and I would have had a chance on my 2nd.

I actually think part of the problem might be the amount of people who pick guns up off the ground. I don't really know how common I get killed by someone who does that, but it may or may not be one of the causes for so few bolts (I never pick up guns except bolts for more ammo).

I used to use bolts exclusively while often being the top player, but after trying out the semi I've started using them when I can. Only having the bayonet with bolts could be a way to encourage people to use them more; sure it isn't all that realistic, but other parts of the game aren't either.
