I use bolts almost exclusively and really enjoy them.

I have been on servers where almost all the other slots are full except Rifleman and only a few players were using bolts, BUT, on occasion I have seen it almost the other way around, twice as many Riflemen were playing and sometimes none or only one Assault. Unfortunately the first situation happens more often than the second :p

I rather enjoy it when I join a server that's in the neighborhood of 18/32 slots full and find that my team is comprised of 1 or 2 assault and the rest riflemen.

I enjoy using the bolt action, myself. With regard to what weapons other people select, though, I couldn't care less if I tried.

I think it depends on the personal approach and the map - in close quarter combat I see a lot more autos, but on maps like the Fallen Fighters people are often keen on bolt-action rifles.

Actually, I don't think that there are few people going for the bolts, I often see many games with open assault slots and many riflemen, because many people actually prefer to use the bolts, due to it's medium to long rage effectiveness. Also, if you have a bayo, close combat becomes way, way easier. :)

The amount of times I have rushed up the building near the russian spawn on Fallen Fighters to stab literally 9+ russians with my bayonet...

The amount of times I have been charging like a bull through Pavlovs/Zab's house screaming like a madmen while stabbing everything on my way.

Who needs a SMG when you can just stab em!

I play bolt action, got the gun at level 50 since a day or two and loving it. Just need to know that you have to scan every area to be sure there are no enemies in suboptimal fire range. If you avoid suboptimal fire range you can do fine as a rifleman, and if you find yoursel fin suboptimal fire range use that damned bayonet!

I think that 95% of my kills are with bolts. It's easier to use the others, but the bolt just feels more "real". In buildings, I just become Mr. Stabby...

I pretty much exclusively play MG. Fortunately not many people like the class so there's always one available.

Don't use bolts that much because of seemingly poor hit det, tripwire refuse to look into it.

Thus, no bolts.

Or maybe I don't understand how much I should be compensating.

Should I be having to aim ahead of someone who's 85 metres away from me, sprinting at a 90 degree angle from me?

Nissa la bella ( or nice ;)
Why would I bother starting at a disadvantage when I ( rarely ) play ?

I only took bolt when I couldnt take anything else.
Bolts in RO:Ost were fun and hard to use ( aaah hipshots :p ) and were a majority. Now semi autos are just a smarter choice.

I never choose bolts, no point when I can use a semi-auto or a full auto, if there is no assaults left I go machine gunner as the pistols are better than the bolts. It is a real shame, I only bought roost about a month or so before ro2 came out, and the reason I bought ro2 was because I thought it would be a single shot rifle competition, but it isn't and now I seem to play other games way more than ro2, even ut3 I play more of.

I did, but I stopped using bolts when I stopped playing the game.
Still waiting for weapons/class restricting mutators.
I never thought i would be playing Cod when I bought a game named "Red Orchestra 2".

Unfortunately it depends a lot on your ping. That can have a bigger impact on your shooting than bullet travel time.

You could try aiming at their feet and looking for the dust kicked up by your bullet. How far behind the target that is will tell you how far in front you need to aim next time.

For what it's worth, you'd have to aim in front to hit a target like that in real life too. A rifle bullet travels about 800m/sec so by the time it's gone 100m your target has sprinted about an eighth of a second from where he was when you fired. That's enough time to cover at least a body-width, so you would need to lead by at least that much. In the game, ping will add another tenth of a second to the bullet travel time so you need to increase your lead to compensate.

I think this is the crux of the issue. You, and many others, would rather choose the best weapon to win, whereas Im more interested in an authentic re-enactment of the battle. Now that submachine guns have lost their disadvantage of being innaccurate at long range, the bolt rifles are becoming all but redundant from a technical perspective. Not useless, but they dont have a unique advantage as they did in RO1.
