I would love to use them but the terrible lag on every server makes them worthless in comparison to the other weapons.

Please Tripwire, fix the bullet lag! That's my number one problem with the game.

I only use bolts, and I'm usually the only one in the server choosing it voluntarily (even if there are semis still available)...
So yes, bolts are an endangered species.

If you really think there's a problem with the quantity of bolt rifles in the game, then do something about it and start using the class yourself.

Far too often I see so many people complaining about how few bolt riflemen are in the match, yet you never hear whether or not they picked the class themselves.

You mean like I did?

I've just finished playing for about two hours on the H Squad server, a 32 player realism server which cycles most maps. In that whole two hours of playing, I saw one other person using a bolt action besides myself.

The thread title states:
"Does anyone use bolt actions any more?"

The main question was in the subject header.... the original post was mostly a rant based on personal observations of a lack of Riflemen.

I did read.... did you?

Thanks for that, and the various other vaguely insulting posts in this thread. It's nice to know that we cant have any sort of dicussion on game mechanics without it being dismissed as a "rant".

You do realise this is a discussion forum, right? Are we only allowed to post positive commentary on the game, rather than starting a debate about a mechanic which I think has made for a negative experience?

Your vague implication that I have no common sense: "Common sense again, would say yes... this is right, otherwise the game would have been released with different loadouts." - is irrelevant. You're right. I could of answered the original questions in my OP myself. But the whole point of a discussion forum is to air my views and invite others to post thier opinions, thus engaging in a discourse on the subject.

If everyone who could answer their own questions didn't bother to post, then this forum would be a much quieter place. You may not like my opening rhetoric, but please, dont dismiss it as a "rant" jsut because you happen to disagree.

Lately this whole forum seems to be full of people who are so eager to dismiss any negative opinion of the game that they jump down the throat of every thread discussing it, or questioning it.

Ive been here since the very first public incarnation of Red Orchestra. I know that doesn't mean squat when it comes to shaping the game, and I wont be one of those arrogant chip-on-the-shoulder Veterans who thinks he has a right to make demands of the dev team. But I do at least think it gives me the right to air my views in this community without having my post polarised and treated as a rant.

Grow up.

Bolts are fine as weapons. What is not fine is the consequence of a hit on a soldier. When you hit someone with a weapon he should be screming in pain, not taking a shot back at you then bandaging. When hitting someone running he should fall on the ground cause of the shot. Arma2 does perfectly from that point of view. When you get hit the first thing you see, even if it's not a lethal shot, is your soldier twisting his head, screaming in pain, not even thinking about shooting back at the other guy.

This is only partially true.

There are many many stories that depict a different situation as the one you described. Depending on where your hit, and how much adrenaline is soaring through your body, it might just nullify a lot of the pain that you feel, atleast until the adrenaline wears off.

Soldiers have been shot while fighting in battle, and not notice that they've been shot until they noticed that they either went into shock or bled out and died.
But it would often take quite some time before this would happen, and they would just keep fighting on.

The only thing that I notice Red Orchestra 2 does wrong, is that it allows you to bandage internal organs. Getting shot in the lungs or liver should have a significant impact on your ability to continue fighting. Though I do believe that due to a bug, chest shots are less likely to induce bleeding as they should be.

Yeah, not to mention the fact that you can bandage yourself in about one sec. It's almost like auto regain health in COD except for the fact that you do it manually and that it doesn't restore health to 100% (even though the injuries doesn't have much negative effect on the player)

When It comes to weapon handling it certainly needs to be improved.

I've never ever ever seen the rifleman class completely filled out so you have to choose another class sooo... I think nuff said :p
If I play it's on 32-40 player servers and I mostly see 3-5 rifleman in my team. All the rest spray n pray...all the way :D

I pretty much always use bolts. When the situations demands for it I will pick up another weapon form dead teammates/enemy's. When I'm capping a buildig I'll pick up an SMG and if there's a tank around and I see an AT rifle I'll pick it up and take out the thread. I refuse to use them semi automatics and the Stg-42. Bolt Action all the way :IS2:

It's true, there'se barely any riflemen now. I think the squad leader, machine gunner and assault classes could be cut by one or maybe two slots to up the number of bolt actions.

On second thought, increasing the number of riflemen would cause more camping as the bolt actions aren't suited for assault at all. The result would be that on assault maps such as Grain Elevator or Station the attacking team will lose more often due to players being more reluctant to attack the control points. It'd be really frustrating to be the only one in the capture zone while the rest of one's team attempts sniping duels.

They only aren't suited to assault in the face of an overpowering number of automatic weapons.

As I said, I find I camp more with a rifle because I know the enemy team is comprised mainly of submachine guns. If I knew there were fewer of them around, I'd be much bolder about attacking objectives. As I said Im reluctant to enter buildings knowing it will be swarming with assault classes, rather than just a few.
