After play RO2, I was thinking about getting the older game to try out the mods etc. But before I get it I want to know if it's still being played. Some feed back would be welcome.

Absolutely RO1 is still being played. If you truly appreciate "realism" at it's finest, I would try it. You have a full variety of WWII weapons, Tanks, PAKs, maps, etc.

The PDZF modders have a couple of very nice servers, which now includes new tank sounds and burned out tanks stay on the battlefield.

The Darkest Hour (MOD) is also very nice compliment to RO1 based on D-Day and thereafter.

Take your pick though....you can still find both RO1 and Darkest Hour still very active on a daily basis.

here to kill your monster
RO has been at a steady level and i think will remain so for a long time now, as it offers something nothing else can provide - particularly as the sequel seems to be a different kind of experience.

the euro server typically has a full house (50 players) most of the day.

Usually after 1600+ GMT you should be able to see more or less population, especially during weekends. 1800-2000 is another pretty sure bet.

Usually these revivals are short-lived...but I'm in with RO until it dies
It's more fun to hold an area for an extended time while nades blow up left and right and massive suppressive fire going on to finally hold it or lose it. The suspense and keeping a cool head is the main theme of RO.
And in Zhitomir, you get even more frantic close quarter combat in the apartments.
It's amazing to see 4-5 people huddled to hold a room strategically.

I have yet to have this kind of experience in RO2.

I have been playing RO1 since late 2005 and was playing it alot up till last month. Darkest hour the mod for RO1 is even better and currently has better gameplay right now than RO2. Not giving up on RO2 though as I know it will only get better in time much like RO1 did back in 05 when it was new.

There are my favorite games:
#1 Blade of Darkness. Released 10 years ago, but very unique and only one of its kind. Fan forum is still alive and mods are still being made. And some still play it via hamachi. But regural MP is dead.
Developers sadly went bankcrupt due to piracy. The game is supported by modders that always try to help.

#2 Operation Flashpoint (Cold War Crisis/Resistance/GOTY v.) Released 10 years ago. Forums still active although most players moved to ARMA 2 some still play new mods and some MP. There are few servers. But the game is better than ARMA1 or 2 in campaign. ARMA 2 has better MP.

Even after 5 years RO will have a few servers and one of them will be hardcore for even 10+ years with some evening gameplay.

So yeah RO shouldn't die. I don't know about its engine modability, but probably there will be mods released. And the game is MP based.

Excuse the noobish question but is PDZF a specific mod or are the content you mentioned downloaded to the client upon connect?

Gonna give RO1 (DH etc) a try tonight, played it some years ago and I do remember some epic tank battles :)

If you like tank battles, check out the 10th panzer division servers. (There are 2). The one I prefer is the "Real" server, which has new sounds and effects.

I do believe they mod their own maps, etc.
