I played DoD the mod and DoD retail for about 4 years before i found RO the mod. It holds a dear place to my gaming heart and im sad to see the forums go even know i dont play sauce.
This sounds pretty similar to my experience. I was introduced to DoD in 2003 and played for 3-4 years with a really good Clan. RO came out and I played both for a while. Then Source came out, and sucked, and Ostfront came out and ruled. Then I got into Guild Wars, but that's another story. DoD was the first real fps game I got into online and it was alot of fun and there's occasionally enough nostalgia that I'll go back every now and then and play a little.
Then I'd get pissed off at the game play, remember how much hope I had for source, only to see it cruely dashed against the rocks of shiny graphics as if that was enough to overcome the horrible game play...yeah .45 ACP and 9 mm are identical rounds, oh and so is 7.92 kurtz and 30.06 when fired from a b.a.r. Put the 30.06 round in another gun and it does completely different damage though. The stupid punching attack with the tommy/mp41. That Italian Mauser pistol that the panzerjager troops got...GRRRR!
Yeah, after that RO really became the game for me. I still hung around the DoD forums (well, the messhall really) because it was fun...because the game sure as hell wasn't.
