We have the Germans, who are outnumbered 10 to 1 by the Soviets, but have much better technology, training, and weapons. It's 1942 and the Germans have made it all the way to Stalingrad, and are likely to capture it. Having almost made it to Moscow, it is sure that the Germans will capture it in a summer campaign so the weather isn't against them.

The Germans are thousands of kilometers into the Soviet Union, and will go a thousand more.
Do you think the Germans will win, and defeat the Soviet Union?

They should have just kept bombing it til there was nothing left, instead of bombing it so there was almost nothing left and then decide to attack it with men. Should have just encircled, turned to sand and then went elsewhere.

If the Germans had come with the "Liberator" type mentality instead of "Conqueror " type....they may have just had the right amount of resources they needed .....People....

Well Hitler and his gang would not have been Nazi's if they thought the Russians were their equals worth of being liberated. But yeah, Hitler being as bad or worse then Stalin did not help matters. There was a great line from a Russian who became a partisan when the Germans overran his town, it was something like 'I had the choice between Hitler the dictator or Stalin the dictator so I choose the one that spoke Russian'.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estonia

how can you win against a nation with epic bolt action rifles with bayonets so long, they can stab the enemy on the OTHER side of the river without leaving the comfort of there foxhole!

I think you have the two sides mixed up.
Exactly - the Soviet Union's economy was on a full war-time footing, whereas the Nazis didn't feel the need to do the same for their own, due to fear of creating public unrest.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but I recall that the Germans' yearly tank production was similar to the Soviets' monthly figure.

well the Germans might have if Hitler made up his mind on the next steps and stopped micro managing thing that were impossible to do on a large scale like the German army plus if he realized he is no tactician and should have listened more to his generals ideas but i digress why are we talking about this:confused:

IF it was 1942 and i was reading the paper i would say, Germans for the win.

I was actually just looking at the Google maps Volgograd .... it is a big place russia. Well worth having a good look across from Kharkov to Volgograd... then whip the pointer up to Moscow... the distances and crazy.

If it was 1942 and i had Google maps..... i might say diffrent....

Also remember the Germans had a alot more PR when it came to there war.

It was almost imppossible for people in the west to know what postion the russians where in truelly....turns out they where giving them selves times with a Ukrainian Human shield.

In hindsight they where probably better off not splitting there army group and going into the crimea... just concentrating on Stalingrad..... cause once they won there the supply to up north for the ruskies would dry up.

It was a good tatical idea to attack there..... just very ambitious....especially trying the crimea as well.

There are a lot of countries between Germany and Russia. I think it was Guderians autobiography where he was bitter to the fact since Ukraine alone could have meant a million soldiers at least. Hitler himself refused it after it was recommended by his staff and generals.

Contrary to popular belief the Germans wasn't really outnumbered at Stalingrad until the end battle during the hammerstroke encirclement. While yes the Russians had more troops on the eastern front than the Germans they didn't commit that much to Stalingrad.Just enough to hold on and while at the same time built up huge army groups on the flanks of the city.

In some stages of the battle the Germans actually outnumbered the Russians in the city itself. In many ways the Russians let the Germans get fully committed deep inside the city so the counter attack could encircle the whole 6th army and that's just what happened.

While the Germans was highly trained they was fighting a different Red army than they was at the begging of the war. Most of Stalingrads defenses was manned by elite guard units that would fight to the very last man.

To the Germans shock thanks to the fortified city and highly skilled defenders they lost the advantage in superior infantry that they had at the start of barbarrosa. After loosing the entire 6th army the Germans never recovered and was on the defensive form that point on they had lost the initiative.
