I don't see how that's a bad thing. A game that appeals to the lowest common denominator means it's accessible by just about anyone.

I feel like people are making the current situation regarding game population out to be worse than it actually is. The Christmas update obviously got the game lots of revenue, and the sudden drop in players is most likely the amount of people that only bought the game because it was on sale just dropping it (though the 6 month update drought might also be helping the decrease).
Not to mention Killing Floor is still one of the top 50 games played on Steam, even at the (hopefully) end of the update drought, with the Summer event right around the corner.
