Do platoon leaders only get pistols?

I noticed in some of the pics the platoon leaders only have pistols, although in the one gameplay vid he had an MP40....

Do you think platoon leaders should get long guns?

Ofcourse they will get SMGs or rifles. Not that they would really need them, but they will.

I'd go even as far as letting them choose between a rifle, a semiauto and smg.

then hed die and learn from his mistakes. but, yea i know its not realistic but it still would be pretty cool for gameplay. doesn't really matter though.

What I get from Rommel's Infantry Attacks (although this book is about the First World War not the Second) is that officers took part in the combat. And in Rommel's case he even shot a few dozen Frenchmen.

He used the standard Gewehr 98 (not much choice back then) and often enough the situation was so dangerous that every men HAD to fight and shoot.

So rifles and SMGs are realistic as a choice for NCOs.

I would rather it be like this, I mean a pistol will be useless on bigger open maps.

Don't forget about the dog divisions, that were the most deadly troops of the war

you could reduce the number of magazines for leaders so they would stay a bit out of the battle to save ammo / stay ready for battle.
for example you have a smg with 3 magazines , you would carefully choose your spots and not spray around.
