Well, I never played it, but I played Baldur's Gate I and II plus expansions, Icewind Dale I and II plus expansion, Planescape Torment and Neverwinter Nights. As those are all based more or less - the newer the less I guess - on the rule-set of D'n'D I think I can say that he created something wonderfull.

(Lets just forget that D'n'D movie for now...)

The thing that was wonderful about it is that it depended on the people you were with. The DM mainly but all the others could contribute as much to the experience. Lotek ftw lol.
May he rest in peace.

I spent many hours playing D&D when I was young. He will be missed.

here to kill your monster
I never really got round to actually playing much, but It was a large influence on my childhood.
I bought the monster manual and a few other bits and like traveller literature they were a facinating read full of imagination, that inspired a lot of the artwork I did in my youth.
This is clearly the loss of a major creative figure in the fantasy genre.

I remember the very first D&D rulebooks like Greyhawk and Eldritch Wizardry - I do not even care to guess how llong ago those came out.

The guy was responsible for a lot of the current trends in RPG - some of the stuff he came up with is still being used today in computer-based RPGs.

Shame but, I have to say, he always did look like a heart atack waiting to happen. The inventor of D&D prolly didn't get out much for exercise and stuff.
