There are not many medical tools you can use, that can cause damage.

I think that the best choice would be a Dissection Knife.

There are also hammers and chisels, to crack skulls open during dissection.

These tools are used in dissections, which means either anatomy lessons or autopsies. This means, they are used on cadavers, and cadavers are dead human bodies, so these tools are not exactly "medical", because doctors and medics are most probably not using them.

There is an electric saw, called "oscillating saw". Medical versions of this tool are used in surgery and dissection.

All these tools are not made for combat.
This is why i suggested the Space Marine Apothecary to be used for inspiration.
Maybe the crazy guys at Horzine created combat-grade tools for the Scrakes.
Scrakes were created to serve as medics, so it makes sense. I mean, they implanted them with chainsaws at the end, maybe before they gone completely mad they had created such tools. Maybe they were also commercially available.

I like the idea of multiple types of starting melee weapons but on a cosmetic level only. I think instead of giving each perk it's unique melee weapon, having a small selection of 4 or more melee weapons that the player can choose to spawn with in their profile selection would be preferable. Giving each player a unique feel to their default melee weapon without creating unbalances in the game.

I like the Cosmetic changes idea, i just dont what you would use, the shovel sounds good.

What i would add is that when you each level 2 on say commando, firebug etc.. your knife skills graduate to level 1 Zerker....not all weapons only the base knife and you can still be grabbed by clots of course.

Level 4 commando, Hunting knife skill goes to Zerk 2

Level 6 commando, Hunting knife skill goes to zerk 3.

But only the knife. This makes the knife more usable on higher difficulties.

And it is logical for it to do so, IF your a commando you have not been just using your AK47 the whole time. You should have picked up some knife skills.

I was thinking something in the same vain could be done with the 9mm but it might upset the balance. Maybe level 1 SS handling of the 9mm at level 3 commando and the maybe level 2 SS handling of the 9mm at level 6 commando, fire bug etc..

Being base weapons you should get some training that rubs off as you level up.

Also, maybe for AK-47 you could have a Bayonet. That would be the logical knife setup for the rifleman.

While the idea is nice, I think each Perk having unique normal pistols would be easier to think up ideas for, and serve a more practical use than a Knife that sets enemies on fire on hit (though that WOULD make an amazing dual-perk weapon).

The Sharpshooter could have the normal pistol (since at high levels it's already a pretty damn good starting weapon), but maybe after Level 4 or 5 it gained a laser sight, ALA M14 EBR

The Medic's would probably also have a default Pistol that also had a larger magazine, and after Level 4 or 5 it was given an attachment that lets it heal teammates on contact (for 10 or so health at the same rate as the syringe, so as to not make it just better syringe)

The Support could get a Volley pistol from level 3 onwards that benefits from his regular perk Shotgun bonuses at half the rate

In the same vein, after getting Level 3, the Commando could get a 45 caliber Mars Automatic pistol that benefits slightly from his rifle perks

I'm pretty sure the Demolitions and Firebug perks would just have the default Pistol with semi-weak Explosive charges and Inciendary Ammo respectively, though if there exists pistols that focus on either of those aspects, they'd probably be better fits

Since the Berserker most likely prefers the knife over the pistol, to keep it fair he'd probably just keep the vanilla one with no bonuses (in its current non-sharpshooter state), though one with an attached knife middle-click attack would be pretty cool (if unbalanced or pointless as a starting weapon)

I'm mainly bringing up the Pistol thing since I think that it'd be better during early game (first joining a server) if each perk had their own advantages instead of just "picking sharpshooter, medic, or beserker during the beginning unless you're level 5/6 of a certain perk"
I love this idea

We actually have that in the modding section for the WTF Mod and it's called a Banhammer (with a C4 block used as an axe head).

Speaking of the WTF Mod, do you know if it still works with the current KF release? I'm assuming it won't but... `~`
