I don't have any problems with 'spawn on SL': before I respawn I look on the map. If I see that the SL is too close to the enemy or moving fast towards the front line, I choose respawn on 1 or 2. If I see that he is in a safe distance, I spawn on him.
It is a feature that I had to get used to. But then after some time I saw that it improved squad cohesion and cooperation, so I accepted it.
In some scenarios and some situations I don't like it - mostly if I want to play lone wolf - and then I simply don't use it.

So many players attack respawn on SL. Few players only defend respawn on SL. defend respawn on SL for real reasons to defend it.
Respawn on SL simulate several things :
- moral factor symbolized by Sl and his link with soldiers who can change the face of a battle
- chaos of war who is the fact who create a line of front inside the line of front
- fog of war : it's a fog of war inside a FPS look like there is a fog of war inside RTS
- Respawn on SL simulate "resistance pocket" during battle

Exactly that!
Spawn on SL makes the game less satisfying and less realistic. It becomes a shootout like you said.
So adding spawn on SL took away so much from the game and adds so little besides the game- and immersion breaking factors.
So again TWI please make it optional without unranking the server! Give us back some tactics besides "SL stay close to cap and stay alive!" because I find this boring as hell.

Spawn on SL truly changes how I play
For you, realism mode and Respawn on SL sucks for severals reasons. For severals reasons, realism mode and Respawn on SL are really interresting. Don't change your way of playing, if you want - but don't say something who is not totally right.
But you don't want to know HOW MUCH attractive and interresting can be Respawn on SL - EVEN with its problems. Problems of Respawn on SL is more players THEMSELVES ! Respawn on SL, it's a weapon. What is suck : it's the use (or maybe we need to say the misuse) of respawn on SL not the weapon that is respawn on SL.
I want to talk only to reasons of superiority of respawn on SL. People accepting or not accepting this superiority is not my problem. I just remenber this superiority of respawn on SL. It's why i defend respawn on SL who is too QUICKLY and easily attacked.

You do well. You are in the good way to understand RO 2. ( so i mean realism mode). It's a good reason.
With respawn on SL, SL is really an SL. Respawn on SL is one of marks of SL inside the game.
Anybody with more than a passing knowledge of TWI should know that you're actually insulting the devs when you say this game is anything like COD. If you just want to vent, fine, but realize that they're probably not going to listen to a word you say if you say you think this game is anything like COD, which it is not. You might as well curse them up outright, for all it will get you.
That said, I like spawn-on-SL because I very frequently play SL and enjoy the challenge of getting to a good position to spawn my squad and make a difference. It mitigates the unrealistic boundaries of the maps in some sense. IRL I would have my squad flank any serious resistance if possible.
That also said, I'd be open to a change if TWI implements it. I trust their vision for this game. Call me a fanboi if you wish.
Respawn on Sl gives real meaning to the squad leader. And it make remenber us "moral factor" was present inside battle.
