Hey, do you want to play some good old day of defeat via steam?
version 3.1 is the last gritty one you remember before they went commercial.
there are 4 servers up at least and sadly there aren't many players (0 most of the time, to be honest). maybe some of you will give it a try or at least spread the word and thus there will be a few more players to have fun like back then, again!

http://dodbeta31.wordpress.com/

all you need is half-life 1 installed on your steam-account :)

is anyone here playing it from time to time already?

cant fond any good screenshots on the net, but i think this will make memories reappear, too:

the greasegun!

just look at the old hud and the environment! brown in brown and grittyness everywhere. the old crosshair!

edit
the introduction to the page is in german, but dont worry, scroll down and theres some english words, too. all you need is on the right side anyway (download links), so dont bother with the text at all.

there are no medics in 3.1 iirc. theres jst "beeding" from time to time which you have to treat on your own. many people wanted that feature back when they took it out going retail. it didnt bother me, but i didnt think that it was the best feature ever, either. but no, there are no medics.

I know there were no medics in 3.1. I was wondering which version ha them. I think it may have been the beta but I do not remember. I think they originally had the grease gun.

the greasegun is optional on para-maps.
just had a fight with 10 other people, so there are still a few guys playing that game. the only problem i see is that over the years of retail dod and dod:s the percentage of kar-whores in such this small 3.1-"community" is relatively high.
at least you dont see from where they shoot you, so you dont know you're facing a karwhore before you're dead. good old brown/green uniforms on brown/green level-textures :)

The so-called Kar-whores never bothered me one bit. DoD was all about having very diverse but at the same time very complementing classes and without a doubt, for a new player, the Schuetze class was the hardest to master. I went from MP40 to StG to Karabiner and the back to MP40 because I just loved hipshooting the sh1t out of everyone.

I never once felt the Kar was overpowered, just a very hard but at the same time powerful weapon. Unfortunately stupid Valve listened to all the whining and nerfed the Kar in the source version. Now it's completely useless, but then, that game is hopelessly lost anyways.

i was just a little surprised because i didnt remember people using the kar the way they do now. maybe im just getting old, too. havent played an FPS for months and got my *** kicked by kar-users and garand-guys, too (ive got the impression that the garand kills with one shot more often in 3.1 than in the following versions, which is very good since it makes the garand a worthy counterpart to the kar)

I must be thinking of another game or mod then. My younger years all blur into one thing now so everything looks the same when I try to remember...

The rifles where allways good weapons in the mod days, its ever since it went retail they have been nerfed.. thats why many DoD fans don't like DoD:S, they made very big changes to it going from mod to retail, they feel like compleately different games actually.

Even the players who tolerated DoD Retail had problems with DoD:S :D

No kidding, i think very few of the people who played and loved the Mod went over to DoD:S (many probably bought it, thinking it would be great, but buying and playing are different things), it was a compleate 180 shift in target audience, it changed allmost everything about that game, from the fluff like its visual style, all the way down to the basic machanics and gameplay, nothing was left as we remeber it from the mod days.

Maybe because they are indeed completely diffrent games?

I have to say that it does have some point though. Although I don't dislike DoDS too much, comparing to some old betas and such it is quite lame. Makes you wonder what kind of crack they were smoking when they made DoD retail and DoDS in the first place.

Making more money was no doubt the intend, yes, but you have to wonder if it actually panned out that way, or if DoD:S would have made them more had it been like the mod, just bigger and better, as everyone hoped it would be.

DoD 1.0 (retail) was pretty mainstream and pretty successful (considering people who had HL didn't have to buy it). The problem was more that they switched developers and that the new devs at Valve thought they knew what made DoD great but really they had no clue. Oh yeah and reducing the content to about the half didn't help either. The game in its current form is actually quite okay, but still not as good as the original.

If it werent for 1.0 I would not have discovered DoD! And also 1.3 is very close to 3.1 so Im told!

And then DoD died when source was released! :(
