Darkest Hour 3.0 out Tonight!

Of course it's possible to release via installer. Beta 1.0 and 2.0 were released that way, as were the various bug patches. However, we've said from the start, with TWI's encouragement, that we wanted to shoot for a Steam release. We're locked into that commitment now and there's no turning back at this point. You'll be hearing some news...very soon.

Update:

Hi guys,

Just wanted to bring everyone up to speed on the availability of Darkest Hour over Steam. This was originally scheduled for late 5th June, to be nice and ready for the 65th anniversary on the 6th.

The DH team handed off the build to us in time and we uploaded to Valve. Process involces us building into the correct format, upload, Valve make it available behind password, we download and test; then, all being well, we upload any last minute changes and Valve can make the whole thing publicly available.

We were in the latter stages on Friday, spotted an error and were re-upping to retest when Valve's internet dropped out in the office. Some person doing maintenance in the building had clipped through a cable. I assume his remains are still being served in smart Seattle restaurants right now. No idea why it took the relevant cable company so long to find the fault, but there were (unsurprisingly) people going berzerk in Seattle, as well as over here. We tried to push it through to them via other routes, but it wasn't going to work at their end.

To be safe, we have restarted the whole process today, to make sure nothing got bollixed up in the whole mess, are re(re)testing and so on. With all the time differences, we are recommending to the team that we release DH through Steam tomorrow (Tuesday 9th June). It will end up with front page coverage on Steam and other PR to support it.

Summary: after the arsing about on Friday, we are trying to be 100% sure nothing has got messed up and will have Valve release it tomorrow, once we are quite sure everything is currectly in place.
