Forcing people to do things they don't want to is the same thing that make governments fail. Not a good idea.

If this idea was implemented there is no way in hell I'd play a tank game on a public server.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear. I would never want this sort of mutator to be played across the board - I would just like to see an inidvidual server, or possibly an individual map, be made for team-tanking. This would be analagous to maps like SPARTAAAA, in which the only way to play is in melee mode, or any one of several servers that advertise themselves as "Rifles & Bayoz Only".

Why does it seem so heretical to so many just to suggest that there be a place to specifically highlight the tactic of team tanking? Snipers have "Sniper Heaven"; couldn't tankers have "Team-Tank Server"?

tanking in squads

Yes by far the most effective tank is a multi-person operation, but barring that some players refuse to let you in their tank,Iv always suggested that heavy armour go with minimum 2 players and be supported by med an light armour with single operators, my reading of tank warfare has always lent to the work of teams developing ethics at a squad level and always go back to the same player so you get a chemistry with that player. Players who yell and gripe" to get outa there tank" I can do without.

I agree with that sentiment, but a few ppl worry when suggestions like this arise- there's really no need as it would be popular with a few only a players, on the odd server at the most.
I think a variable position swap and enter/exit delay would be good for CA maps with 1-3 tanks, obviously to discourage ppl trying to run off with one of the few tanks available- but also to create a tank that needs to be fully crewed to reach full potential ( driver or gunner swapping to hull mg, whilst enjoyable is a bit too easy and reduces need for that 3rd man)
Also if the enter exit delay is introduced, the squad leader can't instantly jump out and spray AT infantry- again it's fun but hardly fair. It would be better if the tank's own infantry worked to protect it (assuming it crossed their minds to do so of course...)

This kinda mut could be used by some servers to encourage TT- i'm not gonna say it should cos it's a touchy subject, but i will say this.
The guy who sprints to the only panther and says that's mine- get a p4 or stug is not really being fair and helping the team IMO. If he is that good he should be able to manage a lesser tank on his own anyway.
So agreeing with wolf- were a mutator like this to be used on an predominately tank map, it should be flexable to allow the delays to be altererd, or even eliminated for certain tanks- it seems the right thing to do and should keep most ppl happy.

compulsory team tanking would be a nightmare, i just quit a server playing krivoirog, where i finally get my hands on a tiger so i can push back the russians & take the east point. I angled it perfectly when i spotted 2 t34's with my binoculars when some tit got in the gunner position & started turning the turret forwards while these 2 tanks came rolling in at point blank. I just commited suicide so i could reclame the tiger when it repspawned but allies managed to take the final point.

Because every "leet snipah" can shoot 100m shots on the move, full speed in a T34, and penetrate a P4, learn the critical hitpoints on each enemy tank, estimate ranges so the first shot hits every time, and hit a fast moving P3 at 900m.

Yeah, gunning takes no skill.

I can do both. One shot kills on targets moving full speed across map at ranges at and above 1km. It's really not that hard to gun in a tank. I'm a trooper tried and true and i'm not allowed to use the tanks in my unit anymore because i was embaressing the "best" tanker we had. Gunning in a tank is easier than firing a Faust.

My suggestion:

let it all like it is and just let it last 10 or 15 seconds to change from one position to another.

And please don't let the tank stop immediately when changing from driver's to another position. That's a unfair advantage which single tankers have against fully crowded tanks :(

Me and a pal were playing that aradaradarad server while in one tank, so I've become even better at driving. I just wish people would talk when they jump in my tank. What I like even better (sarcasm) are the people who jump in and instantly start shooting at everything while spinning the turret who yell at me when we get killed. Plus there are the hijackers (I want a vehicle kick feature for people who jump in and try to take a tank for themselves) but I haven't seen one since the last free weekend. I prefer to drive, mostly to teach my pal how to shoot since he doesn't now a thing about tanks or weak spots. I like the idea of a TT server but there are always those people who if they can't get their way, they try to ruin it for everyone else, and there's not always an admin to deal with them. Good ideas sometimes don't have good results, but I guess someone has to try them.

I'd rather have a few seconds of "switch position time" added than being forced to team tank. While I like driving, I had many games ruined for me due to some smacktard gunner shooting around for fun as soon I start driving.

I'd also vote for a limited number of respawns for the heavy tanks like x respawns for a Panther / IS-2 / Tiger and then have them replaced by T34s / Pz4s. That could also be a cool mutator. Of course it'd add a problem if someone blindly wasted those tanks (kinda happened in real life too) but it would also make those tanks more valueable for the team and killing one would really have an impact on the situation.

It'd also be great if driver / mg gunner could give quick voice commands like "enemy tank 5 o'clock" by just looking in the tanks direction and clicking maybe right mouse button.

Right now, there definetly is too little value in team tanking though. I noticed that I actually actively seek for team tankers, as most of the time they are no harder to kill, but you get more points doing so.

Some players are complete assholes about this. I jumped into a tank just yesterday, and the driver stopped, and told me: "get the **** out".

I replied that I didn't see his name on the tank. We argued, and he finally got out, and JOINED THE OTHER TEAM.

I sympathize with players who get stuck with inexperienced or foolish crewmates: it can be very frustrating. But in my opinion, anybody who doesn't want to team-tank shouldn't be playing Red Orchestra--or has forgotten why they started playing Red Orchestra in the first place. I mean--hello? Realism?

If more people showed a little patience with noob tankers, instead of selfishly hogging tanks all to themselves, they might find they had more EXPERIENCED tankers to play with.

In regards to the OP--I think a simpler way to compel players to team-tank is simply to create two separate character classes: Tank Driver and Tank Gunner. Only Drivers can drive, and only Gunners can shoot. Either class can operate the bow machine gun. Tank Commanders can both drive and shoot. Simple.

sounds interesting, but who wants to play the MG operator then?

either class i think he said. decent idea except i like to chop and change with my crew mates.
Still like the swap position delay idea as a server option, but seeing as there's now about 300 ppl playing this game, most of which are infantry, it's pointless to further divide the tankers.

I dont see what some of you have against this idea, he's calling for a mutator, not a forced game feature, dont like it? then dont play on servers running that mutator, thats whats so great about mutators, choice.

Personally i think its a great idea, if we had a couple of servers (US and Yurp prefably) then people who want to TT can do so in a place where they can be sure they wont be yelled at for getting into "my tank! omgz0r GET OUT!".
It'd be a nice choice to have, and nobody is forced to do anything.

I'm all for not forcing players to group up if they don't want to because like mentioned, some people don't work well in tanks. No spacial understanding or something. A better idea (since I hate bots) is to free up tanker spots on the server for sentient players, or those who think they may be, to do whatever they want in the vehicle roles so we're not stuck with dee-de-de drivers....

Leave the bots to mark tracer fire for us tracks:eek:

have a happy....

Team Tanking

Team Tanking

Hi
I do not usually team up on armoured maps, Orel, Debrecan and BDJ by choice. Reason being the number of people who dont have working voice coms, who are team tanking but dont work as a team, have hi-jacked your tank to use as a taxi. Team tanking is always more affective and critical in heavy tanks. That does not mean single tanking is not a team effort, three players in three T34's stand a far better chance against a Tiger than three players in one T34 as long as they work together.
