Oh. Thanks for the newsflash.

No problem, buddy. :) Brought to you by Rss News Network. Fair and Balanced.

But seriously, to my eyes this seems to be analogous to, say, a group of SS or just normal Heer veterans meeting up under the Hakenkreuz. No?

No. I know this isn't very intellectually said, but the Third Reich was the bad guy and they weren't victors of the war. There's a distinct difference between SU and N-Germany. Not going to list them here, I know them, you know them.

The Soviet Union's dead, Russia's got a new flag - shouldn't state celebrations take place under the state flag? I mean, I don't know, but just seems to be kinda bad taste, but maybe that's my russophobia speaking.

USSR's gone, Russia's got a new flag - that was used by vlasovites. I'm quite sure that veterans would get very mad if they used the new flag. I really don't know for sure, but this is how I think it is. One thing I know for sure: Many russians know this better than I do.

I wonder what the vehicles are before the T80's.

BMP4's?
They're 2S25 Sprut-SD's, BMP-3 chassis with a 125mm anti-tank gun.

It does. But since victory was achieved under the red flag, it is being used as a symbol of that victory.

Not just Russia but every other country that fought victoriously against the Nazis deserves a parade and a holiday for sure :)

I didn't know that it's been 17 years since the last time they did this--so it's not like this is an annual event anymore.

I think that that's a bit of confusion by the presenters. The parades stopped completely after the collapse of the USSR, but there have been parades since, this is simply the first one to included vehicles.

Heh, nice point.
Why the big deal on the CNN about Russia "flexing it's military might." France has parades with the military vehicles, but nobody is screaming "Gawd, The Napolean Empire is Rising!!!!!"

I liked the last years parade better. It didn't have vehicles, but several thousand of soldiers singing the national anthem was really moving.
Also, for the first time I managed to visit the soldiers' cemetery during the official event. I was pleased to notice lot's of young people there - looks like not all were dumbed, there still is hope..
