Yes, they should be able to choose between a bolt-action rifle, a semi-auto rifle and an SMG, as long as there are only 2 squad leaders per team.

The squad leaders should have a pistol on realism mode too in my opinion since they were big status items at that time.

I'm not particularly hell-bent on bringing the SMG back, but it would feel more authentic, would it not?

There can be a working solution for this, as evidenced by a picture from this thread:

The "Minimum players" is responsible for the locking/unlocking of a specific squad when the player numbers requirement is (not) met. All TWI (and custom mappers) would have to do is go through their maps and fine-tune this, giving us just enough open infantry/assault squad to fill them all up, plus the speciallist squads open (i.e. marksmen, at least 1 AT at a given time, etc.; depending on what squads are available on that map).

Not only would this allow for reintroducing SMGs into Classic, but it would also have the added benefit of making us play in full squads, instead of having a small number of players scattered across several squads (but some people are what they are and just don't want to play as a team in a team game and therefore they'd whine and moan about it, but we can't account for everyone's special needs now, can we?).

Ideally, the minimum players requirement would be combined with the loadout option, as per Nikita's proposal (i.e. SMG or Rifle & pistol).

's way me sees it, guv'

Squad leader should be played as a mobile spawnpoint, giving his squadmembers a tactical forward spawn area so the assault classes in the squad can storm the position under cover form the squad leader and MG. Having an SMG encourages the SL to simply play as an assault, while it's possible to be ery effective using this tactic if you're a skilled player, the majority of people who would choose the class are not.

A G41 or SVT-40 would be a much more practical weapon. In any case the SL is issued with a pistol which can be very effective in CQC attacks. It is hard enough to find a SL who was any clue what he's doing, giving them SMG in classic would just compound the problem of idiots taking up roles that they can't utilise effectively and ultimately cripple a teams dynamics.

I voted no, I quite like it as it is. But also, it means that people don't see the class as just another opportunity to get an SMG if the assault slots are full. If the only primary weapon available is a bolt action rifle, it's more likely that the people who choose the class are the ones who actually want to be a squad leader and play as such.

I realise it's a decision based on gameplay and not realism.
