I'm getting slightly bored after 53 hours. I only play TO and only 4 playable maps are really taking their toll now. So far, I managed to ignore it and focus on the great combat but I really do want to see something different now. Still I got an awful lot of entertainment for 22€ though :)

Just got it on sale! Can't wait till Christmas break to try it!

I've just been looking into it for the last few days.... looks like fun.

Though it seems a lot of people pick the vanguard..... which means I'll be using something else. This will be my stocking stuffer.

Though FarCry3 is right up there too..... but that'll wait until I get the new video card.... which could be around the same time.

Yeah, I always try to pick the class that has least players too, sometimes it's really annoying though, I once picked an archer which had 1 player and there was like 5 vanguards and 5 knights. I picked archer and next round we had 7 archers, r u serious?

I welcome you to our Knight Brotherhood, where heads are smashed with mauls, arrows are shrugged as if they were flies and vanguards with their stab spam are defeated by our kite shields.

Just got this game, and I am surprised at how much fun it actually is. Even if I am doing terribly, getting killed over and over, somehow it is still a lot of fun.

I like to run around spamming to "screaming" button. If you come across someone that will not stop screaming and yelling on the battlefield, that's proabably me. People sometimes get annoyed lol.

Probably no worse than people in Killing Floor spamming the Insults the entire match ;)

Did you do the advanced training? One of the most important things in this game is that you have to look directly at the tip of the incoming weapon to block it. Just pressing the block key won't guarantee a block.

Other thing is to consider is that weapon swings are pretty accurately modelled, so you have to plan for your swing as many things may happen between your mouse click and the actual time of the swing hits. The enemy can move out of the range, other enemies may move in the range(awesome when that happens).

Also avoid bigger servers(stick with 24 or less), FFA, LTS and play exclusively TO. So that you can spawn pretty fast, while getting decent combat while having the teammates watching your back(or hitting, unfortunately). Some may think FFA offer the best training as it's faster paced, but you'll get ganged on pretty quick and it's not fun.

Classes also matter and hitpoints can be ordered as Knights>Vanguards>MAA>Archers. The class difficulties are on the reverse order so don't expect to pick MAA and do good, you'll get squished in big fights. Knight is the obvious choice for beginners.

For the combat, I suggest you to avoid any fight other than 1:1 ratio. Even an extra man matters hugely in melee combat. Don't hesitate to run back to your teammates when you're overwhelmed(there's a catch-up mechanic in this game, so don't depend on that). Don't swing madly, on the contrary play a reactionary gameplay to master the combat. This enables you to practice your blocking; so block, swing, block, swing and wait until your enemy makes a mistake.

When you feel good about yourself with blocking, start experimenting with feinting and weapon positioning. Block>Swing>Block>Feint(enemy expects a swing and blocks prematurely)>Swing(you'll probably get this hit)>Block>Swing>Delay weapon(by turning the screen opposite of the swing direction) and so on. Eventually you get the hang of varying your attacks/defenses and may defeat players without even needing to block.

Anyways, I hope you give it a one more try. It's a very fun game when you get hang of the combat and get rid of the feeling that everything is random and boring.

You can also head over to the Game's official forums. I've been looking through it for the last week to get familiar with a number of things prior to purchasing & playing the game.... and many of the members have the classes, weapons, maps and everything else down to a science. They have a lot of very useful tips to follow over there.

Some of it to me seems a bit over analysed and made to focus mostly on gameplay mechanics than real-life tactics, but I guess I will better understand once I start playing.

I don't know anything about damage stats, mechanics, code in Chivalry... but I did arrive on the scene knowing a lot about swordplay, as I fence competitively in real life.

This is definitely my kind of game--the melee combat is tactical and quite deep, very skill-based and timing-dependent.

Favoring Vanguard with the "greatsword" at the moment. Never use the charge attack, though--too predictable.

Yepp, if your opponent is any good you are dead.

Too bad the latest patch brought some serious bugs, for example massive random lags. And a lot of the achievements still don't work (not really important but hey).

Also if you want to unlock a specific weapon the cheap way, kill peasants. They count as unlock kills too ;) Helped a bit with unlocking the warbow (I hate archery in this game )

To correct this, never use charge attack directly facing your opponent it is brilliant against unsupecting or pre-occupeid foes!

also LEARN TO SATB/OVERHEAD!!!! It's no good as a vanguard to take out an opponent when your back swing kills 3 teammates in the process!!!!

Your thoughts parallel my own. :)

Correction: my favorite target for a charge attack? An inattentive archer. Seems to be a one-shot-kill when aimed at the upper body or head.

Yeah, I have Archery training & experience, so that's probably where I'll start off....

.... but I do like my blades... had a nice collection back in Canada. Didn't bring them here to Australia because you need permits and all kinds of paper work to own anything other than a steak knife.

Maybe they need a Client Side Hit Detection Mod ;)

Great moments recently:

--kicking two knights, a hammer-spammer and a battleaxe-spammer, off the log in Dark Forest to their deaths one right after the other.
--throwing a smoke pot into a group of three archers, charging in, and slaying them all with one mighty swing.
--Dodging a vanguard charge as a man-at-arms, then turning around and kicking him face-first into the spiky death traps on the Arena map. :D
