3rd person comes in handy when using large shields or pole weapons. Lets you get a sense of distance a bit easier, and you get the benefit of seeing your true animations, even though the first person ones are already damn close.
It really boils down to preference, I haven't seen anyone (including myself) playing any better because of it.
What really needs work is the dodge and shield animations. Man at Arms can do a UT style dodge, but it often looks like he's just sliding quickly in a direction and there's no way to predict it. Knights using shields also suffer from poorly timed animations, when they block and drop their shield quickly, it doesn't always show to other players. This means it's difficult to tell how you should approach them or if they're attacking.
