In this game what are the characters like? Do you create your own or do you choose a guy from the start?

On the steam forums the devs stated that there are only 6 character skins available (no females for some reason, well there is one but it's just the trader), that doesn't mean that we won't be able to create new characters or that they wont add new ones later on.
