I have something else that may shock you then. The average age in the US Army during WWII was 26. This game takes place in 1942 to early 1943. The Wehrmacht wasn't marching 18 year olds in mass to battle just yet.

I hava a question for everyone. How many of you even notice the players faces while you are playing?
where the hell are u getting ur information from? what the hell??? the avg age of a us soldier in ww2 was 19 and thats a fact, mst of the 26 year olds were squad leaders or higher

many at stalingrad were not draftees, but were veterans of previous engagements.

soldier captured at stalingrad. note dirtied face, deeply furrowed brow and i'll bet he's not even 25. war ages peoples past their natural state:
ww2+Stalingrad+037-1520

the guy on the bottom looks like a 60 year old robert carlyle with malnutrition:

When I said draftee I was talking about the US Army because he mentioned their average age was 26 which I don't believe.

If you look at that photo with all the guys none of them look out of their late 20s. Certainly none look like they're in their 50s... A little dirty and unshaven, but I don't see any wrinkles or unibrows.

Maybe the older and more worn-down faces are for Heroes?
You start off as a young-looking dude, but your face get's older etc (or to be more simple: you get olderlooking skins) etc.

Anyway, i like the faces so far, except maybe ofcourse the unibrow thing.
But i do not need RO soldiers to look like young action heroes with clean shaven faces.
Cuts, bruises, dirt, 'long eyes' from exhaustion, maybe some beard-forming etc would be good.

I don't see how this is so shocking to you. It's only an average number, adding up all personal ages to find a medium. It doesn't mean everyone was 25-26 years old.

Well according to an 1985 pop song, "19" by Paul Hardcastle, the average age of a WWII combat soldier was 26, in Vietnam, he was 19. If a pop song isn't definitive, I don't know what is.

Here's a theory, maybe he's a "Hero" so he looks more experienced.

My main gripe is the lighting on the face. In those screen shots, it looks like there's light coming from under the helmet. It's pretty obvious the head was rendered without the helmet, allowing for the helmet to come off, hence the well lit forehead. It's not really a big deal, it just irks me as a photographer. I'd like to see the lighting adjusted when a helmet is on - but it's not exactly a high priority to me, and neither is how old they look.

I didn't say young action heroes, nor did I say they should not have facial hair. I hardly consider 17-21 year olds action heroes.

Also: your evidence is a pop song? Do I really have to even post a rebuke to that?

AVERAGE number means that there are as many people above 26 as below it. I don't believe there were as many 26+ year olds as people under 26.

Think before you type! lol

Omfg dude, there were no Volkssturm in 1942/43 or at Stalingrad. EVER.

Most WW1 veterans were officers or NCOs. Officers and NCOs make up a very small % of ANY military.

Do those cavemen in that screenshot look like officers.

Reiteration: Think before you type!

i'm pretty sure the discussion moved away from stalingrad a long time ago.

and his average was derived from the entire war, not just stalingrad.

Do those cavemen in that screenshot look like officers.

yes, ncos.

Why am I not seeing any emblems on the German helmet in any of the screen shots thus far, such as their version of the eagle?

My head hurts after reading those last 3 posts.

There's a simple reason why that German in the screenshot looks the way he does. Like many game development teams, he was modeled after one of the German members. With a few battle worn features added. Not all of the characters are going to look that way. It's to show some soldiers who have been fighting for long periods of time. Which is totally realistic.
