I think there has been a slight miscommunication here. I never denied the splintertarn helmet camouflage, just the chicken-wire.

I apologize. I posted that link with the sumftan pattern helmet cover not because I misunderstood you. I just wanted to make a point that most of the heer helmet covers were produced and distributed in 1942. So this opens up the question if there was a possibility that a commercially produced cover could have made it into or around Stalingrad? Or is it more logical to suggest that most of the helmet coverings were made from burlap/cloth or from zeltbahns?

I agree that chicken wire would most likely not have been seen on any helmets at this time, however.

All levels of apparel customisable? Please no. No, no, no, no, no. One of the things that bugged me most about CoD:WaW was how everyone, single and multiplayer, seemed to sport a different uniform until the two sides looked more like mindless mobs than coherent military units.

I want to feel like a member of a unit. That is the entire philosophy behind military training--suppression of individuality, promotion of the collective entity. Individual, unique uniform and kits would be inaccurate and quite immersion-breaking.

Look at any World War Two picture gallery. How often do you see soldiers with different uniforms in the same unit? Perhaps a sergeant might wear a forage cap, while Red Army soldiers would wear a mix of helmets and Pilotkas, but other than that, uniforms were the same. That was the point: standardization for simplicity of supply.

The only customization I would support would be improvised winter clothing for the Germans--sheets, stolen wool or fur coats, etc...

WaW actually did a good job with uniform variations. Uniforms don't last forever, and they wear out at different rates on different soldiers. Therefore, some soldiers will be wearing some articles that others will not.

As for supply reasons, the Germans had many different types of camouflage smocks and uniform camouflage tunics. They also had their standard field-grey ones. This results in soldiers looking very different, but that is actually realistic. It's not hard to differentiate friend from foe, as Soviet and German uniforms are drastically different than each other. You just need to actually pay attention, and it all starts falling together.

It would be unrealistic, however, if you could customize your gear loadout. For example, no German was ever allowed to detach his gas mask canister and gas cape. No sane soldier would leave behind his bayonet, zeltbahn, or breadbag either, so there is no option for customization here. It's purely just the uniform that can be customizable.

Yes I like how Call of Duty World at War balanced variety, however it would have been nice to see more uniformity from time to time instead of the entire army looking like a rabble.

I would say, like some others said early in the thread (didn't read it all, way too many pages of same stuff), that some customisaton would only help to improve, I imagine it won't be that every class, and every member of the team can pick all the available customisation items. For instance, the current system makes the new player look like a clean-shaven recruit and he should therefore not be able to customise his uniform that much, cause it would be kind of wierd. However, if the seasoned veteran has not at some time scavenged something that was NOT part of his uniform he should be able to wear it. I liked the idea that someone earlier mentioned about certain maps have certain presets regarding uniforms, the most obvious example would be Summer and winter maps.

Now, on customising faces, I wouldn't mind it , since in most games which I have seen that have such customisation people usually don't look the same, and I personally think it would be a big improvement from ROOST since I got so sick of almost every German soldier looking practically the same, only rarely did i see any variation, and that was mostly on the Russian side where I could see stubble and stuff on the faces.

Won't be fussed about character customisation not being in the game but it's something that me and my friends always like having, so we can recognize each other on the battlefield and try to take each other out.

Point is, if it won't look ridicilous, won't hurt the gameplay, and won't mess anything up, why NOT have it?

Again, sorry if someone basically has said the EXACT same thing I just wrote, don't have time to go waste my time looking through the entire thread.

Also, english is not my native language so this post may be kind of hard to read

I haven't voted because there isn't an option for " I don't mind either way " and I really don't :)

The same goes for all the other minutiae that seem to twist many a pair of knickers round these parts, I don't care. Just a solid game with solid gameplay, with number of rivets remaining entirely optional in the name of sanity and good fun

I vote yes as long as the options are realistic and does not seriosly alter the balance. So no pure gold weapons, desert camo in the snow or dual-wielded MG42s with underslung riflegrenades with bayonets.

... why do you have an automated DDOS attack script sitting on your desktop?

I, really would like to see a character customization. Maybe not very in depth, just have it that you select through preset uniforms and faces.

I think I remember seeing an Unreal Tournament 3 mod with the ability to select different faces, body types and clothing through a simples selection mode of presets - so obviously it is within the realms of RO2s engine.

You get too much variation in basic uniform colors, camo, helmet covers, head gear, etc., and you'll not be able to tell friend from foe.

I would rather would like to see them in their standard uniforms or it would not look like Russian/German army, something that could be great is a body modification system, like wrestling games offer, where you can modify how tall, fat, (none)bearded somebody is.
Everybody would just make a short guy to stay in cover better. and imo devs could use the time making this making other stuff, so no on my part.

German and Soviet uniforms are so incredibly different that no matter how much each is customized, you will always be able to tell friend from foe. The colors and the shapes are just so different.

It sucks because Call of Duty has gotten games to fall into the "green letters over friendlies" syndrome. People just stopped paying attention to uniforms after CoD 4. It's a real shame. :(
