Finally after the sad news that Schutzesepp's computer died on him and caused him to possibly lose his Ardennes Village map it is with great pleasure to see that “Sepp” is back to work on another map focusing on the same region.
I think if a some of us got together to help Sepp out with the cost of the recovery we might someday see this map in play. I would gladly donate some euros for a good sake.
Unless the HD is completely busted physically there is a good chance the data is still there, maybe only a destroyed file table or something. If he can see the disk in windows there are even software he can use to scan the disk for data. GetDataBack for NTFS is a good choice (if he can connect the disk to the system).
How about putting the broken drive into the freezer?
Apparently you can get some extra life out it, hopefully enough to recover the data. Never tried it myself, but a ex-colleague of mine mentioned this trick once. He used it a couple of times to successfully retrieve data from broken drives!
i'm amazed by how much good will this has generated and i am sure sepp is overwhelmed thanks guys . As a former mapper for HL2 i know that it sux to lose something you spent 6 months working on. I'm just glad he didn't give up on mapping entirely.
