Can't bring up Steam overlay

I can't bring up the Steam overlay while I'm playing (by pressing shift+tab), nor does it bring up the overlay when I click the + on the invite friend screen.

Any idea how to fix this?

Are you using bandicam/another recording program? If so, launch KF without this running and then open after KF has launched. For whatever reason, this was the problem when I played the beta.

Turned out to be Fraps, I closed it and it works fine now - worth noting for the devs, as I don't have this issue with any other game.

Exact same problem here, overlay wouldn't work. Saw your post, tried closing Fraps, overlay runs no problem.
