Well, The Japanese Knee mortars were very comman in infanty units... Not having one would be like not having a the Shin gunto military sword. (lets just hope they atleast add the shin gunto) =/

If anyone here has played Forgotten Hope 2 (AAA WWII BF2 mod), they would know how well that mod's mortar/artillery aiming and firing system works.

Basically for those who don't know, the scout class calls in an artillery "spot" on the ground near a target. Then, somewhere else on the map, someone sets up a mortar or gets in an artillery piece, switches to the right "spot" (cycles through a list), and then zeroes in the dials on his scope. Then he can fire and adjust using an overhead camera that is placed directly over the spot at a 90 degree angle. As you select new spots from those available, you have to readjust, and also have to readjust if the spotted terrain is higher or lower than your mortar.

The spot only lasts for a minute or so, so arty teams must constantly work with spotters to be effective, and when they do work well together, artillery can be devastating. In addition to fixed artillery, the mod also has deployable mortar kits which are awesome for supporting an advance on the move.

Here's a video that illustrates how the arty spotting system works from the mortar man's point of view:

Brilliant vid, but this is a RED ORCHESTRA MOD. In real life, would you really be able to look directly over your target? I agree, I just see a few flaws if you had it exactly the same in RS.

I agree on FH2... Easy to use, provides accurate fire, I just don't believe in the overhead view. Thats what forward artillery observers are for!

Otherwise, I like FH2's mortars best. I found CC mortars hard to use accurately. When I played as spotter, I couldn't find a mortar that wasn't killed by the enmy team immediately.

As Light artillery class on CC, I couldn't find a spotter even during Polish fightnights.

I would personally love to see mortars in the game, but it would have to be done correctly or not done at all, maybe taking a look at the DH mortars when that is released would be a good idea cause im stoked for that! :]

As has been said before: weapons which rely on 2 players working together as a team tend not to work too well on 90% of servers.

You can say what you like about that fact but a fact it is nonetheless. Even in DH, which has a relatively small but commendably enthusiastic community, crew operated weapons are often underused/misused.

They added these in the recent Darkest Hour mod for RO.

I think they work great! Abit of a learning curve though. But as they have already been done for a MOD in RO, I should imagine it could be possible to do on a newer engine ?

Yeah it's very possible that the system can be effective you just need to have two skilled and communicating players to fill those roles. My spotter ran with infantry so he could direct my fire. And I knowing of indirect fire systems from other games such as ARMA2, BF2mods, and a few other games. Was able to dial in and fire on targets effectively. Proof? I don't want to post the image as it's quite big so here's a link. Take notice I'm the third player on my teams list and my spotter is the number 2. I believe he also gets points for spotting effectively. http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/560917278118735811/2AB177D16DB60D699BAC8BE438C2A0AACE0496E4/

I think everyone in the team could act as spotters, just imagine that one of the players is the actual spotter and the rest just tell him about targets. You can already mark the enemy position in HoS with the Z key, why not make it double as a mortar spotting system.

just to let you know DARKEST HOUR has MORTARS! :D
On about 40 percent of the maps
Yesterday I pwned some yankees with the german 80 mm granatenwerfer or whatever its called :D
There are also mortar observers who mark targets like arty and then observe where the shots go (all is shown in the map then)
its made pretty good realistic
I hope that later there will be HUGE maps for RO2 HOS like ARAD for RO OST and we will be able to try out the soviet and german mortars too :)
I LOVE MORTARS! :p

I'd love to see mortars in this mod, but the chances seem so unlikely of them being implemented.

Yup mortars would add alot of depth to the mod. Wish HOS had it too. Not a fan of commander called artillery.

Mobility, teamwork and mortars

Mobility, teamwork and mortars

To answer someones question - the Marines humped their mortars - there were no halftracks to tote their kit about. Really the only halftracks the Marines did have were the M3's with mounted 105mm howitzers. The 60mm mortar crews did have small hand drawn/pulled/pushed cart to carry the mortar tube, base plate, bi-pod and rounds, yet all too often they could not get these carts into thick jungle or up a coral ridge so they hand carry everything - just part of their day in-day out. Typically 3 Marines ran the 60MM w/ additional ammo bearers on a good day.

The Japanese Type 89 50MM only required one soldier to operate it and they were used in large number especially on islands like Peleliu, especially in "Death Valley" where they set them up every 50 feet or so and just lobbed the rounds (grenades) up and over the ridge lines at the attacking Marines.

As mentioned earlier the problem with a US 60mm, you can't get 2 to 3 players to man a mortar:( It's hard enough getting players to help reload your MG ammo! But in the game maybe the Japanese 50mm grenade launcher is their answer to a weapon that they themselves won't have that the Marines will - like a 50MM vs. a flamethrower where each side gets a company support weapon that the other side will learn to fear, and it all remains fairly accurate and faithful to history. Just a thought.

I feel the mortar used in Darkest hour right now is spot on. Great teamwork and can be real effective. Would love to see it in rising sun.
