To be honest, I think the series replaced Counterstrike more than it did UT. UT just died on its own, unfortunately.
I agree about the insultingly stupid dishonesty concerning the authenticity of earlier CoD titles though, but to be fair, they seem to have cut down on that pretty hard in this new iteration! In the multiplayer-side at least. Tomahawk+crossbow mode, Golden Gun mode or whatever they call their version... All honest, possibly fun, gamey game-modes. Singleplayer seems to be more about some Steven-Segal-like spy-movie plot now too and not about stupid war-scenarios anymore.
I'm still not much of a fan of the meta game. Earning levels, unlocking perks, etc. may all be fun online but for small Lans, which is the only environment I play CoD games in, I prefer no bull****, simple kill or be killed gameplay like in, say, CoD2.
All in all the series seems to be going in the right direction though. Less and less pretentious pseudo-realism, more and more game-modes that remind me of games like Goldeneye and games of a similar ilk, and I hear they have regular ol' servers again now too. The day that I get a new CoD game has not come just yet, but it may come. I like what I see in Black Ops anyway.
Now I heard they have bots too! If they turn out to be fun and if the game has two, preferably four player splitscreen in the 360 version I might just get this some day when the price drops a bit.
