I'd like to have a "local" chat for Infantry, similar to the local chat for tanks in RO:Ost that allows you to voice chat with your fellow tank crewmen only. A local chat for infantry would allow players to voice chat with only their teammates that are within earshot in the game. IMO this would reduce confusion as the voice chat would be less cluttered, because players would only hear voice chat relevant to their particular area of the map.

This would be in addition to, not instead of, team chat.

Make it local only.

After playing ArmA2 with ACRE I'd be looking forward to see a similar system put into action in HoS.

Enable the Squad leaders and Commanders to use the Radios to talk to "everyone" and give the normal infantry a system similar to ArmA2Teamspeak, where you can toggle between whispering, normal and yelling mode. This would require the voice chat to be 3d of course. :)

I'd expect a squad chat like in bf2 since it will have the same squad system.

I don't play BF2, so I don't know how it is.

Maybe we'll see a mix. Squad can all talk to each other, squad leaders and platoon leader can talk to each other. But everybody also has local.

I'd like to see (hear..) a 3d system where you could voip only with people near you. To make things more playable, the SL could talk to the whole team.. And actually, I'd like to see platoon leaders ingame in addition with the squad leaders. Platoon leaders could talk to the whole team, squad leaders to their squads.

It would also be cool if when the platoon commander gives a general order to each squad, and each squad leader carries it out as he wishes.

For example platoon leader says "squad A go attack the barn", the squad leader can decide how to take it rather than the platoon leader micromanaging everything.

It looks like that's implemented watching the original shaky cam video. Kind of like Brothers in Arms, except you command players instead of crappy AI.

In addition, I think there was mention that squad leaders can mark artillery spots, but only platoon leaders can call it. That implies there are going to be separate platoon and squad leaders.

And of course nobody is using Teamspeak or Vent when playing RnL or any other game for that matter. :)

Well, very few people use voice chat programs like TS, Ventrilo and Mumble in public servers, just take a look at Project Reality, where most people use the in-game chat instead of Mumble. I don't like this kind of programs anyway, because 90% of the time we are just asking our friends where they are (and it really bugs me to talk to someone a mile away from me asking about his location; zero realism). Actually, most players don't even use voice chat, but those who do usually rely on the in-game voice chat in pub servers.

The worst thing about ROOST voice chat system and VC programs is that you usually don't know who other guy is talking to or where he is when he says "grenade" or something (half of the TKs by satchel charges in ROOST are caused by the faulty voice chat system).

Of course gameplay should be prioritised, but at realistic levels, without those annoying "brain-implant-walkie-talkies". Some things like a SL getting new orders from the platoon commander should stay in, in order to keep a minimal level of organisation, but with orders only shown in the tactical view.

Not if you include a VON system that's actually properly implemented in the game. Of course it would have to have 3D voice, different talking modes and also a good group/channel system if people don't want to have 3D voice (for Clanwars for instance).

ACRE+A2T+HoS = Awesome.

I was just wondering if there will be any?
And if so, what features it may have.

AFAIK, there hasn't been any word from TW on the matter.

Perhaps saving it for Seige? :p
I was so hoping to drive over there, but don't know if I'll get through picking cotton.....and its the wife's birthday that weekend too. "Say, Honey! Want to drive over to Atlanta for your birthday?"

Even if you cannot talk to your entire team generally nobody will use something like team speak, as its too much of a bother. Even if someone spams to his entire team to join his TS channel to get a communicational advantage hardly anyone will join.

Sure in clan matches or among friends people will use external voip systems. But that is because you need to be able to talk regardless of the server someone is in.

However good or bad the in-game voip is, and no matter what abilities it got, the in game voip will be the primary method of voip communication in public games. In the worst case scenario most people simply won't use any voice chat at all.

The main thing for me is that voip with a big group of players quickly gets cluttered and becomes useless for teamwork. For public play small groups of 4-5 people playing together and communicating among each other make communication and teamwork a lot easier.

Now to aid teamwork for instance Squad leaders should be able to talk to the entire team, but for other regular soldiers. I think it's actually better to limit them to local chat just to keep things simple easy and uncomplicated.

Even with Iron Crescendo on teamspeak the teams were divided up into separate groups to make communication useful and not cluttered..

ArmA 2 has the best voice chat

-

Even your lips move as you talk in game...Anyone near you can hear what you are saying no matter WHAT radio chat you are talking to. You also have just a direct chat. Rather than talking down a radio you can just talk normally.

-

This is the best "concept" we can ever have for voice chat. We just need better quality versions of it now.

However, In world war 2. They didn't have radios for every soldier right?

And another, annoying, thing...People will just use stuff like Skype,Vent or Team speak instead of the games one. But I would suggest making most of the in game voice chat just normal speech (no broadcasting to whole team). This way, if you wanted to keep communications. You would have to stay close. Thus increasing team work!

But alas...vent/TS/Skype/Other lamers
