Hi,
Something i am trying to model atm...
According to
this site:
"The Soviet BK1125 boat was used between 1939 and 1945 in all European fronts, from Austria in 1945 to Stalingrad...in all rivers. This armoured ship was used like a tank in a river, in fact Bronekater (BK) means armoured ship. The ship was specially designed to carry different turrets, specially T34, T28 turrets and Dushka turrets. The normal tank factories produced the same turrets for tanks and ships.
The Soviets used these ships in frontal attacks against land-based tanks and enemy infantry. These ships were armed with Katiusha rockets and T34 turrets - the effect was terrifying. The BK ships were also used for carpet bombing fortifications or cities (Vienna in Austria was bombed by these ships).
The BK had 10 crew, all of them naval personnel.
The BK ships were transported by train to move the units from a river to other, it was therefore specifically designed to enter tunnels and cross bridges aboard [...]"
Another good review is on the vendor site of the model-kit:
http://www.migproductions.com/MP/products/35253/35253.htm
even with original photography and links to combat reports.
Seems like those vessels have been widely used on the vast rivers in russia to support infantry. What i am planning to do is a simple static mesh at first, for use in a riverside/ coastal future map (/me thinks about maps like beach-assault, or some locations at the Dnjepr...a Vienna map comes to mind, or maybe an Axis attack at some Volga harbour near Stalingrad?

).
But well...as usual, modelling/ unwrapping/ texturing more complex stuff only for static meshes seems kinda wasted effort... what would guys think about solutions to make this baby actually playable in roost?
Thingy which come to mind:
- making at least the command-hut at the center-deck enterable and using it as a spawnpoint
- placing the ship as a static mesh (f.e. at the quai in a harbour), but linking allready existing T34/ T60 turret classes to this mesh, so that u can use them as artillery-> is something like this possible?
- well... a new completely driveable class

like a tank, but with 3 turrets, commander = captain, driver = master... needs new hitboxes for the hull and deck and hut, then.
This could be used on a larger lake or river map as a tzransporting vehicle, water -> land antitank support and custom artillery. Would something like this blow the possibilities of the current game-engine?
But, hey... i forgot to say, that i'm just a novice in 3d modelling

, especially the latter would be a bit too much for me, atm.
Which leads me to the next point...what ideas/ suggestions do u guys have in starting this baby? I tried two
ways in modelling the hull, so far,
-1st: using NURBS surfaces in Blender like described
here
-2nd: using circle primitives for the frames and finally connecting their vertices like described
here (excellent howto, btw, PDF can be downloaded,
here)
Which way u guys think is better? I'm not only bound to Blender (allthough i'm using it quite often, simply love its interface), if someone has some good tut for ship-hulls using maya/ 3dmax as well, that'd be appreciated.
Another problem is that i couldnt find a high res blueprint for this one... that print on the pages above aint that good, especially the plan for the frames doesnt tell me too much details (at least if you're not that experienced in ship modelling).
If someone could point me to a better print or a source where i could find some, that would be pretty damn cool
Well, what do u guys think about this project, possible/ impossible for a beginner useful/ unuseful for roost etc.?
greetz,
