[Game] Brink

My thoughts after two days of play time:

I really like BRINK. It's a hard game to explain since it deviates from most everything else out there right now. From vaulting up boxes onto a second floor landings, to the animation of planting a charge, to firing a weapon, it just....feels fun. It's one of those titles that truly feels like a game through and through. Also, from various clues, it seems Splash Damage put their main effort into the PC game and as such you get some traditional PC customization. You can customize the cfg files to a pretty hefty degree. It's not all locked down.

It does have some rather big problems though. The latest patch did much to fix early complaints but the servers that play the bigger game modes still get laggy. The ingame cutscenes as well are choppy. Sound cuts out on servers once in a while. Performance on ATI cards needs work (something to do with neglecting openGL which BRINK is built on). And one of my bigger peeves, there's some low res environmental and character textures in use. Guns and faces, as well as environments as a whole, look really sharp. But get up close to something like the escort machine thing and its pretty ugly.

Overall, it's worth the money if you want a unique shooter and can deal with the current problems. I don't regret my purchase but it would be wise for anybody not dying to play to wait until Splash Damage fixes up the major problems before throwing down the money.

I like Brink a lot. Despite being lucky enough to get both the video bug and the sound bug (not every game though, just pops up on occasion), its still a lot of fun. I got the PC version. A very different game which is well balanced and has the right type of focus. The entire game is about helping your team win rather than improving personal stats.

The SMART system works very well, and is used mainly for getting from point A to point B and then to relocate to a better firing position at point C. While not used in combat much, except for entry or retreat, it changes the game a lot, allowing for rapid redeployment and movement in a very fluid manner.

A big thing in Brink really is moving more than you shoot. If you stay in one place too long, unless it is a choke point defended by others on your team, you WILL get flanked.

The guns feel like they have some weight and they actually have recoil for sustained fire:eek::D The assault rifles have very high accuracy for the first couple of shots which deteriorates very quickly. Smgs arent quite as accurate for the first couple shots but they have a much smaller spread, and are effective for sustained fire.

The rifles (their equivelant of snipers) are slow firing but take 2-3 shots to kill (1 for a headshot except on heavys). Only good for a couple levels/ areas on levels but can be used effectively. The play style doesn't support them generally so they are rarely found en masse, max 1-2 players per level. Shotguns are only good for VERY close range, approximately 3m to get an instant kill and it deteriorates very quickly. Outside of like 9m they are essentially useless.

I dont use heavy weapons so I cant comment on them.

The classes are done really well, there is always a pretty even spread of classes, although slightly fewer operatives generally (I might just be a little biased against them because I dont use the class very often). All of the classes are needed to win and there is no class that is "better" than the rest. The upgrades all assist the player rather than make the player, and there are very few must-have upgrades, Its a hard choice picking the upgrades because they are mainly suited to enhance your particular play style.

Guns and gun add-ons are unlocked through a series of challenges rather than earned by leveling up. A nice touch that helps avoid too much swearing at the PC because the opposing player has played more than you and has newer guns. I would advise doing these quickly thought to help you learn the game and to get them done before you advance too many levels, the ai gets much better very rapidly after you start leveling up, normal is actually a challenge after 10 levels or so, and most of the challenges put the ai on defense where they excel (they arent quite so good on attack though).

There are 10 maps that come with the game and while they are varied, they all feel kind of similar. My biggest worry for the game is that they will get stale and that there wont be any/too many new maps.

Overall Id give the game an 8.5. I enjoy playing it a lot, its a very unique experience that is presented beautifully. I doesnt feel like a console port, even though its multi-platform. It plays well despite the bugs, however when playing online the game is sometimes laggy due to either the servers or the netcode, I'm not sure which. If you have the money, its worth getting, but I would wait for some of the bugs to get ironed out before purchasing.

sorry if this has been asked, but is this game the same as wolfenstein et or et quake wars?

Similar because of the class structure (soldier, medic, engineer, operative) and the focus on objective gameplay and teamwork. But BRINK differentiates itself with tighter more focused maps and more complexity in the combat roles because of perks and body types. If you liked those games you'll probably like BRINK.

I dont use heavy weapons so I cant comment on them.

I have so i can.

I've used the medium machine gun a bit, and i can say it definitely kicks arse.

The Minimi copy i have not used much of, given i have access to a more powerful gun, and i haven't used the Gotlung since i cannot into Tower Defence.

Having to use the Heavy body type is something to get used to, since while it is advertised as a bullet sponge, it is closer to a bullet magnet!

It's quite good at 100 rounds per mag (no high cap mags for me :() and with a soldier dishing out ammo i'm sure that sustained Area Denial can be achieved.

Overall, heavy weapons are great :)

Patch is live...

Patch is weak.

Performance wise, the graphics look less "jerky" however my fps is roughly the same (ATI user). Interface changes are so small as to be unnoticeable to anyone not looking for them.. The only really noticeable change is the larger ingame chat font which shouldn't have been changed in the first place. I love the game but this patch does little to fix the glaring problems that turned it out of the gate as a plagued product in the first place.

I play medic primarily with a few of the best soldier perks as a backup class.

It's been a few weeks and the poor performance problems persists yet I've dropped a good amount of time into this game and still enjoy it. The hate is not at all unfounded but at the same time this game really didn't deserve to be brushed off as a failure as much as it has been. It tried something a little different and is fun and that right there is more than you can say about the majority of games so far this year. With that said: PLEASE FIX IT UP SPLASH DAMAGE! YOU ARE SO CLOSE TO CEMENTING BRINK AS A CULT FPS GEM. There's competitive potential here as well. With some not too drastic fixes and an SDK given to the hardcore fans, it could really elevate this title to the stature it could've and should've reached upon launch.

One of the things that this game does well is what we would call Dolphin Diving.
This was fixed in 2006 for RO...

You're referring to sliding? Doing that leaves you vulnerable for a short amount of time since I'm pretty sure you can't break the slide and move anywhere else until it's over. It's pretty easy to kill people who do that. The RO comment doesn't really make sense since RO is realism based and the dolphin dive wasn't a feature whereas the slide in BRINK is meant to be part of the parkour system.
