I know some discussion is going on in the announcement thread but I'm thinking a dedicated thread for it would be better.

I'd be interested in seeing the thought process that went into the box art, as it's not exactly the implementation I would have thought of for the game. If someone from the art team could respond that would be great.

My concerns are as follows:

1. The colour scheme. Typically earthier tones are used to invoke war imagery, I imagine the heavy presence of white is to represent winter warfare, rather unusual to see on a box cover of a WWII shooter. More concerning though is the brown high-contrast shadowed pics of the Nazi ninja and sniper which along with the beige colour invoke the "brown & bloom" images.

2. Choice of models. Mainly the problem is with the ninja (hero, I presume), in that he's as far from the typical Stalingrad soldier image as you can get. He's carrying an atypical weapon with an unusual modification, he's wearing what looks like a modern-day hooded jacket that lacks both the typical colour scheme associated with nazi forces (gray) and has no identifying marks on it. The medal he's wearing is totally nondescript as opposed to something iconic like the Iron Cross. Then there's the decision to have him wear a balaclava. I know it's historically accurate but I don't recall the image of German soldiers in popular culture to have Cobra Commander headgear, to the point where I would say it's misleading out of context. Honestly, if he wasn't wearing the helmet there would be no way to identify him as a German WWII soldier as opposed to some sort of generic balaclava-wearing street criminal.
Sniper is no better, given how most of his body is in shadow and he's holding an ordinary-looking sniper rifle (is there even an iconic WWII rifle that laymen could identify at first glance?).

I first saw the cover on another forum, the thumbnail was too small to make out the title properly so I immediately mistook it for the box art of Metro: Last Light. The guy on the left looks like one of the neo-Nazis in the game, yes, but not like what comes to mind when I think "German soldier in WWII". The sniper in turn with his coat reminded me most of the guy from STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl.

3. the PC Gamer quote. Nothing wrong with having it on the front of the box, but normally these sorts of things go on the back, especially if you're going for a more minimalist cover art. I have to ask, was the decision to put that quote there related to point number 2, in that without it it's hard to idenfity the game as being a WWII shooter? Just seems questionable to make an ambiguous box cover and then explain what the game actually is via a direct quotation.

Now, I like the box art, it looks nice, and I realise that you're attempting to appeal to the mainstream demographic, I just think you laid it on a bit too thick there, to the point where non-CoD players might be put off by it.

Also, if possible, could someone post the back cover of the game? You know, screenshots, game summary, bullet points, quotations from reviews, things like that.

As Ramm pointed out in his open letter to the community:

The box art was designed to draw in people unfamiliar with the franchise. Thus, it needs to show off some cool stuff, and with the popularity of special forces like characters in military games, it's quite a nobrainer to have the soldier as depcted on the cover. Especially, since WW2 still is kind of a turnoff for many gamers.
And RO veterans actually don't need a cover art to suite their tastes, as know of it, and hopefully buy it anyway, and afterwards, as it's in the shelf, it's usually not seen again.

Being realistic, no-one really gets turned off by box-art. Nowadays it is all about reviews and word of mouth.

I think it looks fine, and I don't see why there's this view that the game is going to be "infested" with CoD players. If the game becomes really popular, all different types of people will be playing it. It is what happens. It might spoil the cliquey type community that there sort of is at the moment, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I don't see it happening anyway.

The more the merrier ;)

(Oh, and I like the box art :D)

Honestly it doesn't even matter if they put up box art of a bunch of lesbians, there would be still someone on this forum making a thread about it, complaining.

And how is this bad? Are you implying liking all of TWI's choices for RO2 is the "right" thing to do?

To stay on-topic. I sort of like the cover, though the tacticool german looks quite ridiculous to me. To whoever mentioned their intention might be appealing to non-RO players that like the "special ops" stereotype you get in other shooters, you are probably right.

No i was implying that there is always going be someone crying about basically every aspect of the game. It's their game, it's up to them how to make it. ;)

And it's up to people to react how they want, within forum rules. Please stop calling others "crybabies".

Heh i edited that rather quickly so your reply was rather fast in catching that, but it is true in alot of cases on here.

FYI Your own statement contradicts yourself

"it's up to people to react how they want" yet you are telling me how to act? Good one.

I'd like to think there is a difference between discussing something and whining about it. I'm not asking TWI to change anything or crying about the "we want to appeal to a larger audience" slippery slope. We're in the period between a game hitting content lock and beta/final release, there's little point making suggestions now and most questions have been answered, I don't see why the newly revealed box art shouldn't get a thread on a forum dedicated to discussing the game.

no this really doesnt deserve a separate thread

Maybe not but i will still take a part on it :)

Anyways. A HUGE hand to TWI art team. Game (3d) art have allways
been fine on TWI products.

But i have had lot of doubts and complains about their 2d art skills.
We have seen horrific game menu backgrounds and fonts etc.

But that cover is one good example that they can do really
good looking art.

Now i just hope we can see more of that on gamemenus etc.

Anyways i still think german heroe could be made otherway than that.
Give it more person. Now its faceless stereotype of super trooper.

I would love to seen something more like these:

He's a hero. It's Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad ;)
