I know some discussion is going on in the announcement thread but I'm thinking a dedicated thread for it would be better.
I'd be interested in seeing the thought process that went into the box art, as it's not exactly the implementation I would have thought of for the game. If someone from the art team could respond that would be great.
My concerns are as follows:
1. The colour scheme. Typically earthier tones are used to invoke war imagery, I imagine the heavy presence of white is to represent winter warfare, rather unusual to see on a box cover of a WWII shooter. More concerning though is the brown high-contrast shadowed pics of the Nazi ninja and sniper which along with the beige colour invoke the "brown & bloom" images.
2. Choice of models. Mainly the problem is with the ninja (hero, I presume), in that he's as far from the typical Stalingrad soldier image as you can get. He's carrying an atypical weapon with an unusual modification, he's wearing what looks like a modern-day hooded jacket that lacks both the typical colour scheme associated with nazi forces (gray) and has no identifying marks on it. The medal he's wearing is totally nondescript as opposed to something iconic like the Iron Cross. Then there's the decision to have him wear a balaclava. I know it's historically accurate but I don't recall the image of German soldiers in popular culture to have Cobra Commander headgear, to the point where I would say it's misleading out of context. Honestly, if he wasn't wearing the helmet there would be no way to identify him as a German WWII soldier as opposed to some sort of generic balaclava-wearing street criminal.
Sniper is no better, given how most of his body is in shadow and he's holding an ordinary-looking sniper rifle (is there even an iconic WWII rifle that laymen could identify at first glance?).
I first saw the cover on another forum, the thumbnail was too small to make out the title properly so I immediately mistook it for the box art of Metro: Last Light. The guy on the left looks like one of the neo-Nazis in the game, yes, but not like what comes to mind when I think "German soldier in WWII". The sniper in turn with his coat reminded me most of the guy from STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl.
3. the PC Gamer quote. Nothing wrong with having it on the front of the box, but normally these sorts of things go on the back, especially if you're going for a more minimalist cover art. I have to ask, was the decision to put that quote there related to point number 2, in that without it it's hard to idenfity the game as being a WWII shooter? Just seems questionable to make an ambiguous box cover and then explain what the game actually is via a direct quotation.
Now, I like the box art, it looks nice, and I realise that you're attempting to appeal to the mainstream demographic, I just think you laid it on a bit too thick there, to the point where non-CoD players might be put off by it.
Also, if possible, could someone post the back cover of the game? You know, screenshots, game summary, bullet points, quotations from reviews, things like that.
