After much weeping and gnashing of teeth my game runs silky smooth.
I was getting micro stutters, fps variation, lockups and ctd.
The game would run reasonably okay for a while and then tank completely.
I checked my task manager and was astounded to find my 4 gig of RAM being chewed up and 25% of my processor being utilised while at idle status.

The culprit was windows media player network which I had setup for my son some weeks ago.
After disabling this I have put in 6 hours of testing on busy servers and the difference is incredible.
Absolutely no problems with performance with all settings on high.
Q6850 @ 3ghz 9800gtx+ 4 gig DDR3

This might seem like an obvious oversight but do check in task manager to see what your background applications are, and what resources they are using before tweaking anything else.

Hopefully this might be of some help to some ppl.

i dont think that there's THAT much people who doesn't check their processes first to find reason for lack of perfomance

Pretty much CTRL+ALT+DEL any Windoze-related processes for decent performance. Windoze is what prevents Windoze from working properly.

in windows 7 ctrl+shift+escape is a better combo for task manager as that doesnt take you back to the selection menu but starts it up directly

The only thing using any CPU is System Idle, and most memory other than Steam is MS Security, which I sometimes disable when playing.

Doesn't help *too* much, but disabling Steam in-game community gave me +5-10 fps, and for others it's reportedly given up to +20.

I won't disable anything on my computer while I am able to play other games on max details with no problems. Yeah I know RO2 is so much more hungry because of high details all over those damn big maps but you know what? If you design a game this way you should implement good level of detail algorithms. And yeah the first game based on unreal engine 3 which supports 64 players - so if that uncovers problems why don't you use an other engine?

OMG this worked a treat for me - astounding results! Thanks Nagels!

I'm now running on default high settings without a glitch after wasting a week trawling for solutions and dismantling my lappy for a deep clean.

So, if you are running W764bit on a borderline system I recommend using Process Hacker to identify system bloat (Task Manger only skims the surface). To uninstall WMP, Start > Run, type optionalfeatures.exe and disable Media Player (restart to reconfigure Windows) reinstall an older version if you wish or use VLC Player instead, like me :D

If you aren't particularly computer savvy, or are just plain lazy, there is a utility program called 'Gamebooster' by IOBit. Essentially you create a gaming profile within the application which automatically stops whichever processes and services you assign. I'm pretty lazy, and I love it.
