Semi automatic rifles in reality are typically noticeably heavier than their bolt action counterparts due to all the extra parts needed to allow automatic cycling. They're also somewhat less accurate than bolt actions, due to more loose fitting parts needed for reliable cycling.

So if the balancing is even needed. Just make them start swaying sooner than bolt actions would, when shouldering the weapon without support.

Personally I see no difference in effectiveness between the Bolt actions and the semi auto's. Both seem equally accurate at any range, and both sometimes fail to kill in one shot.

I find the semi to be superior, because of the Rate of fire and magazine capacity.

some people are just better with one or the other, it's basically about preference. Both have stopping power and mostly kill in one hit. I like the semi because if I miss I can squeeze off 4 other rounds in no time.

Aye, and I like the bolt precisely BECAUSE I can't squeeze off four rounds in no time. It reminds me to be conservative with my ammo, to stay stealthy, and to play smart.

If I have the semi-auto, I tend to get into situations where rifles are less-than-ideal. It's a psychological thing.

At normal ranges they are identical (fire the same ammo and same barrel lenght), being the disadvantages the high cost and difficult maintenance of semis... that

Accuracy for a rifle comes in 2 fold both the bolt action is better

1.Gas exchange in the breach. The locking bolt prevents any gas loss

2.The barrel of the gun. Most semi auto's had shallower lands and grooves in the barrel to prevent overheating during rapid fire exchanges. While a bolt action cannot match the semi in sustained fire. Its barrel was superior as was its accuracy.

I think in game the bolt should be more accurate atm they seem about the same but havn't seen them perform over 200 m yet.

When the US army asked for the ultimate sniper rifle made with all the latest technology they came up with this ...a bolt action rifle

Which is exactly what they did.

Easier to produce, easier to operate, more reliable in the field. The good ol' bolt remained the staple of militaries around the world until Mr. Kalashnikov introduced cheap, easily mass-produced assault rifles.

I just have to say, that the AK-47 was introduced in 1947...so they were staples for maybe 4-5 more years?

Anyway, semis are better than bolts. Obviously.
The only real disadvantage is that you're more inclined to waste some ammo. I still prefer bolts, they just feel better. :)

It doesn't take long for certain technology to take off. The German StG-44 was a very similar design to the later AK-47 because the Russians basically stole the design, perfected it, and released it to the mass market.

However, it's worth remembering that bolts were the weapon of choice for armies since long before WWI.

In the case of the Mosin Nagant Vs. the SVT40, the only downside to the latter would be slightly more inaccurate due to the shorter barrel and rifling that would get worn down faster.

However, they both use 7.62 X 54mm, so there's no reason for them to do less damage.

If I had to decide between a breach loader and a bolt action, I'd choose the bolt action too. :p

As stated many, many times before, there isn't much of a difference between the two. However, in reality (and keeping the steel plated stock in mind) you wouldn't want to fire a high caliber semi-auto as fast as you can in game, train to use it or not.
