Everybody raves about 'Come and See'; mostly positive but there are one or two people who seem to hate it. It seems to be that kind of film, although I have never seen it.

More than a few people have called it sensationalist and criticize it for portraying the partisans in fairer light than the Germans (despite the fact it's about the Einsatz-****ing-Gruppen).

I once saw a awesome movie ( again name escapes me, i zaped into it late night and it was aired on ARTE ) that kinda started with a boy surviving a burned down village, imo it was a russian movie too. Very moving and graphic and i cant remember a harder movie about the war in the east besides stalingrad. ( even more i regret not remembering the name )

That is "Idi i Smotri" (Come and See), which Nestor mentioned. Very powerful movie.

Winter War

Still the best war movie I have seen. I haven't seen the 5 part tv serie of this, just the shortened movie.

Yep, I can agree here. The film is great.

But if you had seen the 5 hour tv-series, you would think that the movie is crappy. Despite of the fact that the film version is very good. But the tv-series is just enormously better.

So, find the 5-hour version from somewhere, watch all the episodes in a row and be stunned. :)

Also, the North American release of the film is cut even shorter and has terrible transfer from a VHS copy. It looks, sounds and plays out like crap.

I own such a copy. :D

That is probably because it shows the horrors of war (through the eyes of a small boy) and who wants to be reminded of that?

It is not bad but you need to be in the right mood to watch it because it is rather long too.
