It's intermediate *power* cartridge. 7.62 NATO is nearly identical to .30-06 in ballistics.

But, it is smaller, allowing more ammunition to be carried.

And, regardless, the stupid state of Kalifornia says it is an assault rifle, which is why I had to take a fire-sale loss on mine when I moved here.

No, Kommiefornia calls it an assault weapon, which is mostly a made-up term for anything that looks scary. The TEC-9 is an "assault weapon", but not an assault rifle.

Anyway, the primary determining factor in how much ammo can be carried is weight; as far as equipment goes, ammo is quite dense and usually volume isn't as much an issue as mass.

I don't think 7.62 NATO could be considered an intermediate round by any stretch of the imagination.

7.62x51 isn't considered intermediate.

CA's assault weapon ban counts all kinds of weapons, semi auto rifles, shotguns, and pistols. The term "assault weapon" is made up.

Though, some types of rocket launchers are considered assault weapons.
