Agreed, an excellent read. Even if you don't understand a lot of what he's talking about, the logistical nightmare alone of trying to get patch file size down should make people semi-sympathetic.

It also illuminates why some devs spend as many as two to three years developing their own engine. It's not because they want to export it like the UT engine or anything else; it's just so they have total control over a lot of the code so they don't run into issues like what's stated above.

What they are really saying is they don't want to do PC games with the Frostbite engine anymore. And he is surrptitiously telling BFBC2 PC gamers....we're pretty much done...too bad for you.

(You gotta read between the lines.);)

I got that impression too, that they were saying "last patch, after this forget it!" and using that whole thing as an excuse (justified or not)

I don't even know what version of the Frostbite engine they're on now, but when you consider how many games in the BF franchise have used it...that thing is probably a Frankenstein of an engine now.

Then again, this is the exact reason I didn't buy BFBC2. I kind of knew BF3 was going to be a major step forward for them, and that development was going to nose dive on their other products.

Sounds like a truckload of excuses to me.

They made the engine, didn't they?

On reading, yeah, but I don't really know for sure. It's an engine that's been used for 5 games now, so there's a decent chance the people using it for BFBC2 are not necessarily the people that built it. It's a proprietary engine for DICE, so anyone developing under them has it handed to them.

Battlefield 3 is being developed on the Frostbite Engine 2. It seems like Frostbite 1 was developed specifically to address the 360 and PS3, and all the shininess...and there are a lot of game engines out there that suck balls because they arose to meet that demand.

So yeah. Excuses or not, I think the current crop of BF games might be dead in the water, especially if Frostbite 2 allows them to address all the issues mentioned in that article.

Of course, many said that about BF2, and it's still going strong today.

Yea, the problem being that they didn't think the patching process through, and that their cooking program didn't produce 100% identical code even if you didn't change a thing :p

I don't see that writing as an excuse to stop patching.

Hopefully they're learning from this "Battlefield 3 Beta". The weird thing is, this is a damn good game as well. I can't criticise it :D

Where does it say that.

In inferring a lot there.

But:

BF1942 (2002), Battlefield Vietnam (2004)= Refractor Engine 1.0

BF2 (2005), SF (2005/2006), BF2142 (2006), Battlefield Heroes (2009) = Refractor Engine 2.0 (PS2, Xbox)

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (2005) = RenderWare Engine (PS3, 360)

BF:BC (2008), BF:BC2 (2010), BF1943 (2009), BF:BC Vietnam (TBA) = Frostbite Engine 1.0 (PS3, 360)

BF3 = Frostbite 2.0

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat was a rush attempt to get a Battlefield title on the new consoles, and was actually just BF2 adapted to a new engine to work on the 360 and PS3. BF:BC and the Frostbite Engine was their serious attempt to make a BF title for the 360/PS3, and they did pretty well.

But they're again revamping the engine to build on what they've learned from Frostbite 1.0. If you look at the life span of each engine...it's getting shorter, and I'm guessing their focus on developing for Frostbite 1.0 is dimming if not already gone.

I don't see any official quote in that wiki article about v2.0 and neither anything on the official dice page

O rly? http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/bat...2/19/bad-company-2-pc-graphics-details.aspx##

My name is Johan Andersson (Twitter: repi) and I'm one of the architects working on our proprietary Frostbite engine here at DICE.

If you are interested in more details about DirectX 11 as well as some sneak peaks and technical details about our upcoming Frostbite 2 engine, AMD recently did a big interview with me in their on the AMD Underground blog: "11 Days of DirectX 11: DICE". The longer full interview is also available as an pdf here
Keep in mind that the interview is about the future, beyond Bad Company 2.

Is that authoritative enough?

Yeah, the BC1 maps were some of the most enjoyable and massive battlefield maps. The inclusion of Arty guns was even more so amusing.

I agree, if they aren't working on "new" maps and are putting together BC1 remakes I'll be happy. The maps were great, but the weapon damage was weak. So, bringing those over to the more polished BC2 will be welcome.

Also, some news on Onslaught for the PC.

Well so obviously DICEs idea to counter Activisions 14€ MW2 mappacks is to do.....well........nothing. Seriously this is just a joke. All they did was add a few different versions of the standard maps, and while some are quite good(Laguna Presa Rush), others are just either plain pointless(like the Squad Rush maps -> probably not even 1% of the total players play that) or not fun at all(the new desert map in Rush). And even those new versions often feel way to similar because well, they are.

And while I do not at all wish to speak good of activisions ****ed up price policy, I wouldn't be surprised if some BFBC2 players decided to leave because they're bored and play MW2 instead, where there at least is some map variety, even if 2/5 of the maps in the mappacks are usually MW1 ones ported over. But even that is better than nothing as with DICE. I'd love some BC1 maps ported over, but of course that doesn't happen. Couldn't really be that difficult since they already just simply copied everything else, like the weapons 1:1. Just make half of the stuff destructible and your good, hell I'd even prefer those maps without destructability if it would allow a release.

Reason for this rant is that yesterday I was bored and thought "Hey, why not play this again", but in the end I was just asking myself "Wow, how could I play this for 26h total?".

While they may totally suck in other departments, the CoD games(as in MW1+WaW) were more addictive in MP and had a good load of (back then free) map DLC coming afterwards.

*edit* I just had a look in the BF EA forums and saw that pretty much everyone over there is completely pissed and DICE said there won't be any real new maps until the Vietnam Addon, which of course won't be for free.

"does DICE plans to release any new maps at all? and when?
DICE is releasing map packs with new game modes on already existing maps. Vietnam will bring new maps to Bad Company 2."

I really don't care all that much that there aren't any truly new maps. They just should have had mod/mapping tools. Still, BC2 is an amazing game even if it is currently on repeat.
