One thing I thought when seeing him firing sidewinder after sidewinder and them getting distracted by the countermeasures was "why not just use an AMRAAM and get it over with".

Because button "X" was already binded to the countermeasures.

I've heard almost exclusively bad things about BF3.

First, i've heard it's a MoH rip-off gameplay-wise, second it looks like CoD, third it's pretty much a copy of BC2 (which is a copy of CoD), and last but not least it is exclusive to Origin.

All in all that means that RO2 is better, since that is at least a good game. And it uses Steam.

Silly EA, Origin was a bad idea.

MoH maybe gunplay wise, but it's nothing like confined maps MoH or jump everywhere and run BC2. It's slower and much better than both of these could ever be.

The sounds alone make it more immersive than RO2 is, in here I actually duck when something is coming at me. I would say the little I have played the retail game it's less run and gun than RO2 is on 64 players.

I have some strange problem with this game tho. on every server I seem to be kicked off by an admin. Now I don't think the server admins are there to kick people off randomly, so maybe it's a punkbuster problem? Anyone else has this getting kicked problem?

Everyone keeps stating the sounds are so awesome. Well, they are pretty neat, and I do like the loud supersonic cracks when being shot at, but they are all equally loud. It feels very dull and undynamic when there's very little difference in shooting a pistol and a jet smashing into the ground 20 feet away.

Also, there's so much bass in all small arms! Also contributes to the feel.

It really takes the immersion out of the game. I want that "oh ****" feeling when a tank shell goes off near me. That feeling has always been the best thing in combined arms games for me, and the sound in BF3 really hinders it for me.

After a couple of hours of gameplay, I think it's okay. Best enjoyed when playing short sessions. Can be a bit of a frustrating clusterf*ck on some 64 player maps(metro for example), but the bigger maps are quite enjoyable. Vehicle unlocks are annoying too. Haven't unlocked flares for the heli? Well, one stinger lock and you are gone(mind you stingers are the first unlock for engis). Also, defib is an unlock for assault(medic). Mainly annoying in the beginning, but still, annoying.

Wouldn't buy it now, as it is buggy and unstable as hell. I've successfully changed map once! Always get disconnected after a game. My advice - wait for patches and price drops.

I'm experiencing very little trouble myself.
Got frozen right at the start of the campaign once so i had to shut down the game and restart it.
Changing maps in multiplayer works fine for me, though i did have some lag issues even on 17 ping servers.
Most notable when capping an objective and the progress bar is 'stuck' while the capping sound continues, after a while the progress bar will leap up to where it is supposed to be.

No, seriously, I am interested in the story and acting. Reminds me of Mafia 1, had really good acting for CG actors.

Allright, using that proxy setting, I played a tad with the SP campaign on hard. My short verdict:

The good:

Graphics look generally nice, especially the lightning.
The weapons feel great.
The atmosphere is great.

The bad:
While the graphics could be gorgeous, they are hindered by two things: the greenish tint that was cool back when the matrix was new, and the goddamn "dirty lense" effect. That one's so bad occasionally that it's quite hard not to stop playing, especially since you don't see much against light in dark areas. Which in itself is great, but the dirty lense effect doesn't make any sense. it's like you're not watching through the eyes, but through a helmet mounted camera. Or your character has a huge plexiglass panel right in front of his face...
Sloppy scripting: ranging from AI comrades running through objects (including, but not limited to full blown trucks) to magical weapon changes between loading screens, even if it shouls actually be a seamless continuation.
Generally horrible AI, both of friendlies and enemies.
Sometimes you need to stay not to die, sometimes you need to advance... only way to know the difference? trial and error, at least on hard.
QTE. Why do we need those again? Either make it a cutscene, so I can watch the action rather than the bottom of the screen for prompts, OR make it part of normal gameplay!

All in all, the SP campaign feels a lot like CoD. You got spectacular setpieces, nice atmosphere and nonstop action.
But it's also very linear.

Some other things that bug me in SP:

No crouched sprint. Not a biggie really, but as your AI teammates crouch sprint all the time, it kind of makes me feel like I'm a retard following them through fire in an upright position while they are keeping low.

Save points. Not only does BF3 use savepoints exclusively, they're placed stupidly. I've encountered two kinds: Some are set so close to the action that you get shot dead on hard before you can turn enough to face an enemy. On the others, you have to endure the same long dialogue sequence again and again...

Now that might not be a problem on any other difficulty, but on hard its is.

And Masta great gif. That's what I meant with sloppy scripting. Also, sometimes you see weapons float a few inches away from hands. That creates kind of an ArmA/OFP vibe.

Despite all this, the SP campaign is fun.

An 8 should be a great score. Used for a game that excels in what it does even though it's not a groundbreaking game. So an 8 is being kind for BF3 (In reality it's around a 6-7). However most people only view 9s and 10s as being worthy scores. 9s and 10s should be used for the truly groundbreaking and exceptional games only. BF3 isn't either. However that's not to say it's terrible.

As review scores can't be used properly I'm in agreement with Edge Magazine that review scores should be abolished as it's too simplistic. Most people aren't even bothered with the content of the review rather than with the number at the end.
