EDIT: Wrong forum. The following rant is about Red Orchestra 2, not 1. But it applies to both.
So, on account of the guest passes, I decided to come back to this game and see what it's like when people are playing it.
The first thing I noticed is that it runs beautifully. At least compared to how it used to run for me. Seriously, great job on that, because I doubt it will ever be reflected in reviews of the game- many of which criticized the game's performance at launch.
The second thing I noticed was that the exact things that kept me from enjoying the game before are still keeping me from enjoying the game.
My first game "back in action" and I'm defending Spartanovka with a group of Russians. It's brutal. Both us and the Germans are down to our last few reinforcements. A few Russians and I are camped on the top floor of the Spartanovka town hall just waiting for the Germans to come up. It's just like they talk about in the story of campaign mode, with a few Germans on the bottom floor firing up to the top floor!
Except suddenly it isn't. Because suddenly the Germans have 8 men on the bottom floor to our 6 on the top, and the round abruptly ends, Germans victorious. There is no last defense, no final standoff- the round is simply over. Like all realistic battles in Stalingrad, it ends in a mutual gentlemanly declaration of victory for one side, as anything else would be far too bloody and violent.
And then we do it all again- us as the Russians and them as the Germans. Just like how baseball teams either bat or field for an entire game and that determines a victor somehow.
And I am reminded again of why *****ing about this game is pointless- it's held back by ****ty mechanics that were just as ****ty in the original Red Orchestra. No amount of tweaking or "new gamemodes" will fix that, because their primary audience is still fans of the original, and they would respond to the fixing of those ****ty mechanics with accusations of blasphemy.
Thanks for finally fixing the graphical issues that I and everyone else was *****ing about when the game was released. TWI deserves credit for that. Too bad the game's still ****.
