Bad FPS lag after a few waves

Im getting quite bad FPS lag after a few waves - ive no idea why as my system isnt exactly old or "underpowered".

Seems settings make little difference as the lag always seems to occur...

Specs:
Amd Phenom II 920
4GB Ram
4870 1GB
Vista x64

Anyone else getting this? This is a clean install of vista, with the latest drivers and updates.

Yeh thats what I *thought* it would be at first, so I installed a clean OS with all the latest drivers, exactly the same

try turning off reduce mouse lag. And when the game starts lagging can you run task manager and check how much memory the game is using?

around 1.2Gb of memory at the time of the lag. Turning off the mouse thing didnt help

Starts from about the 5th wave, gets better during buy time (although still seems slower than *before* the 5th or so wave)

Just tried a few different things (pritty much every option) - with Vsync off its stable 90 on high, unless looking down the tunnels during a wave, or a flamer was active - or being hit (things like that) at which point its plummits.

On low (vsync) pritty much stable 60 constantly, which is expected. - however anything more than this, see above effects.

Totally lost now lol

i really need some help to, i cant even finish a map, i start off 40/50 fps, then all of a sudden as the wave starts, 10-15 fps. I have the newest drivers and everything....
