Hey folks, some thoughts on asymmetric warfare and balance between the two sides.
First of all, I feel the balance in Rising Storm (1) was not entirely successful. The fact that the Japanese had to have a (relative) tonne of submachine guns that were hardly produced is telling. Nonetheless, with the Japanese defending, it generally worked to a certain degree, and offered a glimpse at how asymmetric warfare can work.
The NVA/VC and US Army/USMC luckily, are much more matched. It is my understanding that both sides used the SKS and M14 in the beginning phase of the war respectively. Later on, the M16 and AK-47 (Or rather, its Chinese clone) were used, once again, weapons that generally sit in the same category.
The other weapons would be the M60 and RPD, and the M79 and RPG-2, of which the latter two are probably the most different.
(Quick note, yes, we can argue calibres, penetration of vegetation, and magazines for all these weapons, but the point is, the difference isn't anywhere near as big as the automatic weapon heavy Americans versus the bolt-action equipped Japanese)
This leads me to the following question: how is asymmetric warfare being brought about?
Will we see use of tunnels that only the VC can use? Booby traps? A better employment of camouflage? Will the Americans get more support in the form of airstrikes, helicopter gunships, armour, artillery?
